DeLay's replacement says staff deleted records and files
Associated Press ^ | Nov. 16, 2006 | JOE STINEBAKER

HOUSTON - Just three days after being sworn in, U.S. Rep. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs wants Congress to investigate the destruction of files in her office by former staff members of her predecessor, Tom DeLay.

Sekula Gibbs said the staffers walked out of her office Tuesday, resigning en masse. A Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call, reported the staffers didn't like the way she was treating them.

Sekula-Gibbs said in a statement Thursday that seven employees in her Washington office and the district office in Stafford, Texas, outside Houston, "deleted records and files without my knowledge or permission" before quitting.

Spokeswoman Lisa Dimond told The Associated Press that the congresswoman had not yet gotten a response to her request for an investigation by the House's chief administrative officer.

Sekula-Gibbs, who is serving out the last seven weeks of DeLay's term, said the walkouts were "suspicious" in that the seven took the time to delete files before leaving without notice.

Dimond said other staffers discovered the work-related files were missing when they tried to access them.

Sekula-Gibbs has raised a few eyebrows on Capitol Hill in her first three days in office, largely because of the mass resignation.

She prompted chuckles in The Washington Post and other national publications by telling reporters she planned to resolve such thorny issues as tax cuts, immigration reform and the Iraq war - all in less than two weeks of a lame-duck Congress. And then her staff walked out without warning.

The aides' departure left her with a Washington staff of two former Houston City Council aides, an intern on loan from Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Flower Mound, and a congressional aide.

Again…I didn't boot him out…but I don't know how an old hand like Tom let Earle run him out. I don't live in Texas…I didn't serve on the Grand Jury. You don't make enemies if you're ineffective. Tom knew the playing field. It's not like he's the first, nor is he likely to be the last…to get 'Borked'. Tom will do well, though I fear his district won't fare as well.

Since she was only serving for a few weeks, she should have ordered the records deletion and shredding and burning. Just like all that lost to a RAT.

"Well you are correct about not being convicted but then DeLay hasn't been tried on anything yet that I'm aware of. Wait till all the investigations are over and all indictiments are cleared then you maybe able to truthfully make your statement."

So Delay is guilty until proven innocent?

That's how it seems to work with some.

Sounds to me like DeLay and his people are lowlifes.

Sounds to me like as a Tom Campbell supporter you need to give it a rest.

You're right about his district. It now has a Dem representative who is from Galveston which is the place that will make out from having Nick Lampson.

they were going to hound him into bankruptcy it is my understanding the indictment is still in place, I am not sure how resigning kept him from having to continue his defense costs and I think he was savvy enough to handle the hounding.

Lampson was born, raised and lived in Beaumont all his life. He did represent part of the Galveston area when he was the Rep. from Distric 9 prior to redistricting.

Guess she wants slavery brought back AND perhaps the deletions were done prior to her having the authority. Personally, I don't want her having DeLay's Christmas List!

Let me put it this way, what rule or law says they cannot use family members as paid members on their committee. Your theory of questionable ethics is a little lame since it is your interpretation not supported by the years of politicians hiring the staff they think they need or trust.

Adding a follow up story for reference material.

Nov. 18, 2006, 2:09AM
Investigation of DeLay staff's actions begins

WASHINGTON — The House chief administrative officer opened an investigation Friday into the possible destruction of computer files in the office of newly elected Rep. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs.

The Houston Republican requested the investigation Thursday, saying former staff members erased the files from office computers shortly before they quit as a group Tuesday.

The aides were holdovers of her predecessor, Tom Delay. Five worked in the Washington bureau and two were in the Texas office. An eighth aide was a part-time employee.

An investigation was opened Friday morning, said Salley Collins, a spokeswoman for the House Administration Committee, which oversees the chief administrative office. She said she did not know how long the investigation would take.

David James, who was DeLay's chief of staff and who ran the office DeLay resigned in June, has denied that records were destroyed improperly.

He said he and his colleagues provided Sekula-Gibbs with an electronic or hard copy, or both, of all of their work.

Sekula-Gibbs said that wasn't true.

"Their computers were blank. Blank," she said. "I'm talking about the material that I asked them to work on from the time they were hired."

Sekula-Gibbs said she had asked the aides to work on illegal immigration legislation and the 700 miles of fence to be built on the U.S.-Mexico border. They also were asked to research material on Ellington Field, NASA and Medicare, the congresswoman said.

No, you and your one trick pony, TC, will do nicely. Do you have a local political opinion which doesn't involve him?

Now you are really being stupid about your posts.

I challenge you to find any posts regarding him that I have made. Go ahead. The history is there. Look for them.

There was maybe one or two threads total where we discussed Campbell and other candidatesduring the primary, but not a one since the primary.

You think I am beating a drum about TC? No way. You just can't think of anything else better to say.

Tom DeLay is still sleazy and I posted that I did not like him and would rather see someone else in his stead (a conservative). Now you are trying to come up with some half hearted insult against me because I never will support people like DeLay (meaning his conduct and demeanor).

Calling me a Tom Campbell supporter? and that is supposed to be an insult? If DeLay and some other Republicans had half of the moral character of Cambell we would have a majority in the House still. Even that being said, who mentioned Tom Campbell? Not me. Not on this thread.

You think I am somehow trying to ressurect him? No way. At the time he was a better alternative but he's not in it or around anymore so what is your point?

So do I have a political opinion that doesn't involve him? I would say every single opinion I have had nothing to do with Campbell. Since those couple of threads before the primary even took place there has been no mention of Campell.

I think you just have sour grapes for some reason because I won't fall in line to your way of thinking.

Agreeing with you doesn't make me more smart.

I think I have you figured out... you must be a woman.

Its like having an argument with a girlfriend and have her say stuff like, 'well you remember back 2 years 6 months and 4 days ago you said blah blah blah to me!'

No difference.

Every time something about District 22 comes up you bring up TC. That is a fact and very odd for someone who would have us believe he doesn't live here. Regardless of your rants there is something very odd going on.

Liar. Yes. You. You are a liar.

When.

Where.

Show me.

Point to any thread or any post that has been made by me since the primarys where this was even mentioned, and most specifically that I mentioned "TC".

If you can't do it then shut up and apologize.

The only odd thing going on is you being pissed that someone else isn't carrying your own bucket of water.

I don't like the ex-candidate that you are still in love with. Get over it. There are other people more qualified than him, and are much better than him ethically, morally, and otherwise.

If "Billy Bob Whoever" had his hat in the ring running against Delay I would have asked the same questions and posted the same stuff because it demanded a fair hearing. Hopefully now after the royal ass whoppin, you and others will get the picture of exactly what I am talking about.

You say its something special about District 22... well hell yeah. It was the seat of the SPEAKER of the HOUSE nimwit. Should I not be interested in what is happening in my party and the leadership thereof?

Truth is the Republican Party got rotten and it started with the likes of DeLay and his superiority complex.
