Well, the Great Entertainer is waiting in the wings with a lot of money and liberal enough social policies...I won't vote for him though, but people might be desperate enough post-Hill.

At least the phony "Reaganesque" George Allen is out of the way for 2008. I had never understood why people liked him so much when he is dumb as a board. Reagan, by contrast, had a superior intellect.

. If we do not find a standard bearer who can communicate for 2008, it might be even longer.

First we need to restate the message..."Contract with America 2" and then get someone as eloquent as Newt to restate it. Socialism lurks over the horizon..Pelosi, Hillary, you pick 'em. "Lets Roll!"

He's wrong. The repubs need about 10-15 good communicators who aren't afraid to stand up for themselves.

There is no doubt that the Republicans failed to control spending, failed to control illegal immigration, and failed to reform social security..

...and they failed on term limits...if that had passed, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in now!

Someone that impressed me the few times I've seen him.

Rick Santorum is a great communicator--and he actually believes what he says. He mopped up that airhead Bob Casey the Lesser in the debates, but the Pennsyltucky voters saw the Casey name and lost all control in the voting booth.

Another great communicator is Michael Steele.

Newt Gingrich is ethically and character challenged. And I don't think he believes half of what he says. He likes to pontificate. Of course ,pillow talk with a Dem staffer while Speaker wasn't a bright idea either. You can't sleep with the enemy, that's why I don't care for Mary Matalin, who enabled CarEvil to reproduce. Yeccchhh!

It would help if there were a conservative philosopher of some note writing pieces for the NYT. But America is a country of 300 million truck drivers and one philosopher and the philosopher died a couple years ago.

Bush, in the end, I think will have done a better job than Reagan in some aspects:

Real Supreme Court judges. No Affirmative Action O'connor picks.
The recovery to the Clinton recession was handled better than the recovery to the Carter recession. I don't see a recession starting in '07 like there was in '87 to end Bush's presidency.

They also have their SS/Medicare part D idiocy socialism policies.

In the end though, Bush lacked Reagan's intellect and communication skills.

It remains to be seen whether history will exonerate him the way it did for Truman.
