Taiwan: China targeting island with 900 missiles on 5 bases

China continues its planning to invade Taiwan and now has more than 900 missile targeted on the island, Taiwanese officials said last week.

“Despite China's impressive economic rise, it has become more authoritarian, posing a grave threat to our sovereignty and abusing human rights like never before," Taiwanese President Chen Shuibian said. Mainland Affairs Council Chairman Joseph Wu also said in Taipei that China is a threat and has supported some of the world’s most notorious violators of human rights.

Chinese missiles are located in five bases in nearby Fujian Province. Additionally, China now has 11 military satellites in orbit.

Noting calls for China to remove the missiles, Chen said it would not be enough. “If China one day removed the missiles from its east coast, they could just transport them all back the next day," he said.

China also is developing cruise missiles and other weapons. “China's acquisition of long-range bombers and mid-air refuelers from Russia means that it seeks to project its military power beyond Taiwan, because Chinese fighter jets wouldn't need to refuel mid-air in a cross-strait attack,” Chen said.

Wu said China seeks to take over Taiwan because it views the island as a "stumbling block to projecting power" throughout Asia.

Wu criticized the United States for mistaking Taiwanese efforts at further democratization as steps toward formal independence.

Aw lighten up. They just need to ensure they are protected against the tibetan monks.

Good thing we by all those goods from china to fund their military. Sometimes our society continues to do some unbelievable things in light of the evidence.

Won't be much left on the place to have if they fired those missles.

The present Washington government is toast. They will not stand up to the Chinese...while they maintain the excessive spending, confiscatory taxation and regulations that have destroyed many of our significant industries.

Well, at least it's only 900 and not 76 dozen.

I never once believed, like some did(do), that when China started to see just how much money was pouring into their country that they would embrace democracy.

Instead of being poor communist dictators, they are now rich communist dictators that are using their monetary gains to build up their military structure for a confrontation with the west.

Taiwan needs to stop whining and start spending a realistic amount on defense.

If I was Taiwan I'd seriously consider the MAD doctrine. Don't worry about countering China, just make it known to china if they attempt to invade there will no longer be a China.

taiwanese are divided seriouly!
40% of taiwanese support final unity with mainland.
20%-30% of them support final independence.
the rest are middle-on-way.
but almost 70%+ of them suppor to keep status quo for time being...

good luck ,taiwan!

The Pentagon has had two rounds of discussions with the Chinese military on the defense budget process, with the United States explaining in detail how its military spending works and China revealing very little about its secret military budget. Chinese military officials met Pentagon officials in June and provided a very limited explanation of the process Beijing uses to support its weapons and forces. From here.

Rumsfeld had to have approved this. He left too late.

The ChiComs are good with TELs. They have continued to work on them since they are not subject to the INF. My guess is, even the Russians have continued to work on them in secret, and probably have illegal IRBMs hidden. Meanwhile, our only "IRBMs" are cruise missiles. Not bad actually, but it is a shame the US never really developed good TELs and IRBMs. I liked the whole Pershing-II concept.

I have to wonder about at least some of those supporting unity. A bit of disclosure, I have spent time hanging out with Taiwanese expats working in the PRC. It can get mightly lonely, since most companies will not relo one's family - assuming you even wanted to bring them over (most families would hate it). Among these lonely men (and it is mostly men, although there are a few women as well) there are those who lack faith and decency. First there come the prostitutes, then the mistresses, then, in some cases, secret second and even third families. At that point, a dude can become seriously conflicted, not to mention, an easy subject of recruitment by the ErBu.

5 bases, 5 nukes, no problem. Anybody who thinks Taiwan ain't got nukes is fooling themselves.

If a Dem is elected the next prez, I'd imagine an invasion within a month if his/her inauguration. And if it's a certain woman we all know an hate, I'd imagine she'd aid China in the invasion.

Taiwan will only acheive Independence when it gets the big stick (about 100 A-bombs). North Korea proved this and may precipitate Japan and Taiwan to acquire them.

I'm just thinking this is Chen's way of changing the subject. His wife's been indicted for corruption and he will be, too, as soon as he leaves office.
