Al-Qaida plotting nuclear attack on UK, officials warn
The Guardian ^ | November 14, 2006 | Vikram Dodd

British intelligence officials believe that al-Qaida is determined to attack the UK with a nuclear weapon, it emerged yesterday. The announcement, from an officially organised Foreign Office counter-terrorism briefing for the media, was the latest in a series of bleak assessments by senior officials and ministers about the terrorist threat facing Britain.

UK officials have detected "an awful lot of chatter" on jihadi websites expressing the desire to acquire chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons....

The warning comes after a speech last week by the foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, on the terrorist threat facing the UK, and a rare public outing for Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the head of MI5, who warned that there were at least 30 active plots to attack Britain.

With new counter-terrorism measures to be unveiled in tomorrow's Queen's speech, the weekend saw Gordon Brown back an extension to the time for which terrorism suspects can be held without charge, beyond the current 28 days....

For al-Qaida and jihadis, a devastating nuclear attack on Britain, not just the use of a "dirty bomb', would be part of the desire and agenda to cripple the west, sources said....

The network of the rogue Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, which is feared to have sold nuclear technology to Libya, Iran and North Korea, was broken up three years ago, but there are fears that other illegal networks may exist.

British counter terrorism officials believe plots they have thwarted and plots they claim are being hatched have strong links to Pakistan. They say hundreds of Britons travelled in the past year to Pakistan for terrorism activity, including training in camps and acting as couriers for messages. Officials also believe Britons are taking cash to terrorists in Pakistan.

"What do we do when the first terrorist nuclear/dirty bomb goes off anywhere?"

I vote for overreact.

Why wait until one goes off? I say mistakes happen and that a MOAB being tested in Afghanistan went astray and hit the northwest region of Pakistan. Pakistan is a beehive of terrorism and needs cleansing big time with BIG weaponry! Iran and North Korea's leaders need some gentle rubbing out with undercover agents (where's 007 when you really need him?)

We should have did Mecca right after 9/11, you destroy a national landmark of ours, we destroy a national landmark of yours.

The next step would have been to turn Muslims anger against the terrorists, saying they caused Mecca to be destroyed, not America.

Don't think it would have worked, but worth a try!

Honestly, I think we need to eradicate 2-3 generations of these lunatics because they've brainwashed their populations.

I hope so (if one defines "interesting" as nuking the bejeezus out of Iran). I fear our response would be more accurately defined as "disappointing"...

The message needs to be sent to Iran (the most likely sponsor of this sort of thing), that if a nuke goes off anywhere in the world, we take out one of its cities (frankly, I'd be OK with turning the whole d@mn country into glass -- all we need is the provocation). Granted, deterence doesn't work well when the other side is crazy, but they need a guarantee of retaliation anyway.

Sadly, I agree.

I never thought I would say this about any enemy, but I really think it's time to start thinking about nuclear weapons.

You see, on any normal, sane regime, that would work. But Iran's little Napoleonic Power Monger has already stated that they're willing to sacrifice millions if necessary to bring down the West. I honestly think the most effective threat is to say we'll nuke Mecca.

WE NEED TO END THIS HERE AND NOW.
It is becoming obvious that the terrorist will not give up on their objective to create devastation beyond human imagination. We could have breaking news tomorrow that Bin Laden and all his surviving lieutenants have been captured or killed, and this will not end it. We need to be sending a very strong message to ALL the Middle Eastern Islamic countries both friend and foe, that this global terrorism better stop Here and Now or else, and there is no weapon in our arsenal that we will not bring out if we deem necessary, an no piece of realistate is safe from being targeted .
Send a message loud and clear that if they are actively involved in exporting terrorism or even financing terrorism covertly they will pay a heavy price that will last a thousand years.

"Flatten Mecca."

Counterproductive. Flatten Tehran and all of Iran's nuclear facilities. Try to pinpoint where Bin Laden and Al Zawahiri are hiding, and carpet bomb. Tell any nation harboring terrorists that they're next.

Good answer. The problem is we WOULD have to wait for something to happen because we're always the benevolent world power.

That puts us into the uncomfortable position of hoping one our ally countries gets nuked BEFORE us.

Damn, this was a bad time to blow an election.

Well, if he's willing to sacrifice millions, I say we ablige him. If it's discovered that Iran wasn't behind it, we say, "Mistakes were made," and go and nuke the real culprits.

Well, actually British Muslims who are not participating in jihad would be considered traitors to the militants.

That's right, just sit there and let it happen. Be happy that your citizens have no rights. Make sure they buckle-up tho. Wouldn't want to break a law now.

That's impossible. The Democrats have won. America and the West have appeased. We will withdraw. Therefore, Al Qaeda has no case, and will happily retire to their own lands to beat their wives and hang rape victims, to the cheers of Western feminists.

Can we live in a more insane world?

God help these people when true carnage comes to the West, since the Law of the Jungle that inevitably transpires, will be quite at conflict with their cushy little idiot world.
