The design was Soviet. Its suspension system was an American design, but the complete tank is Soviet.

Thanks for the link to the photos!

Don't know if I would have wanted to stand that close to a large object being pulled up by cables, but they seemed to have a pretty good crowd for the event.

Seems the T34/76 and T34/85 are still in service today - Cuba for one, still has them in active service. IIRC the IDF had used some of them till recently.

I saw a picture of a German Tiger with US markings. It was abandoned during the Battle of the Bulge. I think the tank is down at Aberdeen Proving Grounds (MD) on display in their tank park.

Yeah, the T-34 was the overall best tank of World War II. Interestingly it was designed around the Christie suspension system that the U.S. Army had rejected in the early 1930s. Stupid move on the U.S. Army's part...

Yep, the T-34 saved Russia's butt, especially at battles such as Kursk IMHO...strange how an atheistic Communist country could design such a gem; I guess God figured that Nazism was worse and inspired the design. I also think Mr. Kalashnikov deserves a lot of credit for his assault rifle of the 1950s and 60s--if he'd been an American he would have been a billionaire instead of a penniless pensioner of a failed Soviet system.

If this is a Soviet tank, then why does it have German markings?

Why not read the article?

It's amazing how the tank is in such good shape. Peat bogs preserve bodies as well, probably due to the high level of tannic acid in the bogs. Check this out:

I read the article, but overlooked the part about it being captured. Hopefully, you noticed many others have pointed this out to me.

Fear can be very inspiring to an engineer.

I chalk the tank's success up to the fact that it was based on a design that George Patton had a hand in.

It was a perfect ad for the bull dozer....Remember that pickup truck in Twister? After seeing that movie, everyone wanted one of those.

I only wish...Aberdeen has no Tigers these days. Their Tiger I was sent back to Henschel for refurbishment in the '80s, but the grant money ran out and it is still in Germany. Their Tiger II is on permanent loan to the Patton Museum in Ft. Knox.

The only Tiger family vehicle they have left is a JagdTiger tank destroyer, and it is in deplorable condition. The bog tank is far better preserved.

I guess it has been a long time since I visited the armor park down at Aberdeen. You're right, an awful lot of the AFV's down there are turning into rusting hulks.

Or WWI... or what's in some of the peat bogs in the USA!

I had no idea they didn't turn into a rusted hunk of junk! These pictures are stunning.

True. I just liked the "19,000 hours without major repairs" part. Reminds me of the time I happened to be at an Air Force football game on High School Band Day. One of the bands formed an F-117, and without missing a beat the announcer dropped into "air-show" mode, describing the plane and its capabilities....

LOL! That's the head of a bog body that was found in a bog on the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark. He's named Tollund Man and he lived in the 4th century BC! It looks like peat bogs are also good at preserving tanks as well!

I was last there in 2001, and things were in very sad shape. The museum has been closed to the public for some time and has only recently reopened, so I can't vouch for the current condition.

Peat bogs are as they are because they're almost completely oxygen free -- hence, no rust. They preserve anything: there are lots of perfectly preserved bodies found in peat bogs.
