So as much talk as there seems to be among some segments of the conservative base about how horrible Bush's plan is, the gut check of the election apparently shows that the nation is not supporting mass deportation.

You're exactly right. Voters will endorse such things as English as the language of govt. and public schools, ID's for voting, etc.etc. but they do not respond to the harsh rhetoric of mass deportations or attacks on ones ethnicity.

I have been on this forum for a long time and I have yet to see anyone post "I hate Mexicans".

That is disingenous as hell, and you know it!

I grew up with many Mexicans, have lived in Mexico, and I LIKE the Mexican people. They are generally kind, friendly, deeply religious, and hard workers.

One more time, it's about the word ILLEGAL. I don't care what ethnic group they come from!!

We are up to our eyeballs with illegals now because President Bush will not enforce the laws we have. If we are not going to deport them, what is the purpose of passing any new immigration law? The only part of a "comprehensive immigration bill" that will have any effect is to give the illegals here now citizenship. It won't stop another 10-20 million from coming here.
