Reid: Not 'Brokeback' Close With Senator

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nevada's senators - both winning leadership posts in opposite parties - pledged Wednesday to stay close on issues of mutual interest, but not too close.

``He and I just like each other, and I think we set a good example here in the Senate,'' Majority Leader-elect Harry Reid said of colleague John Ensign, who was chosen Wednesday by Senate Republicans to head their campaign fundraising operation.

``He's a Republican, I'm a Democrat, we work together on issues that are important to the state of Nevada. And I wish other people had the same nonaggression pact we have,'' Reid told reporters. ``It's not a 'Brokeback Mountain' situation,'' he added, referring to last year's film about two gay cowboy lovers.

Ensign and Reid went head-to-head in a 1998 Senate race that Reid won by 428 votes. Ensign was elected to the state's other seat in the Senate two years later. Since then, the two men have cooperated to stymie the planned Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump in Nevada, co-sponsored public lands bills and co-hosted constituent breakfasts.

``Their relationship will not be affected,'' Jack Finn, a spokesman for Ensign said of the dueling leadership roles. ``It is a genuine friendship and a genuinely positive working relationship, and most importantly the relationship is too vital for the good of the state to allow it to be compromised.''

One has to wonder, however, just how long Reid will be part of the Senate leadership.Or in the Senate for that matter.

We, as a nation, would be better off if legislators were picked at random out of a phone book.

I was thinking heads must be exploding at DU.

I love how for all the talk about how Brokeback Mountain was supposed to be such a huge step forward for gays, and all that happened is it became a slang term for something being gay.

"We, as a nation, would be better off if legislators were picked at random out of a phone book."

We, as a nation, would be better off if Supreme Court Justices were picked at random out of a phone book as well. Maybe they wouldn't be blinded by eminations from the penumbra.

Maybe someone should check Ensign's background for some shady land deals...

OMG, that's got to be the funniest statement I've ever read. Either that or I'm so tired I'm punchy because I laughed so hard I couldn't type at first.

The random selectees, of course, would be required to adhere to the Constitution. They would read it, many for the first time, and not gravitate toward the specious, semantical arguments that are used today to subvert it's true meaning.

Actually, that might be a good thing. The more people who read it the better. I told someone the other day that the constitution was about 14 pages long (depending on the typeset) and they were shocked!

People have no clue how simple and commonsense that document is.

How about legislative duty, similiar to jury duty, as an alternative?
