White House Resubmits 6 Court Nominees

The Bush administration, trying to push through judicial nominations before Republicans lose control of the Senate, on Wednesday resubmitted the names of six nominees who Democrats say are too conservative for the federal bench.

Five of the nominees in question were the subject of an angry exchange in August when Democrats charged that their selection was a sop to the president's conservative base.

The White House submitted six names Wednesday: Terrence Boyle of North Carolina and William James Haynes II of Virginia to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va.; Michael Brunson Wallace of Mississippi to the 5th Circuit in New Orleans; Peter Keisler to the D.C. Circuit; and William Gerry Myers III and Norman Randy Smith, both of Idaho, for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco.

All but Keisler have generated intense opposition from Democrats.

Under parliamentary rules the nominations must be resubmitted after Congress takes an extended break, as they did this year for the 2006 election.

"Democrats have asked the president to be bipartisan, but this is a clear slap in the face at our request," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the Judiciary Committee.

It would be nice if these actually got out of the Senate, but I'm not holding my breath.

Chuck Schumer's idea of bi-partisan certainly leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes--how dare Bush push through nominees while his party is in control. No Democrat would do that.

I LOVE how the party of "Bush is a Nazi" is whining about others not being bipartisan.

I'm sure Michael Weiner will have Schumer on again soon...

I'd say this gives us a pretty clear picture -- as if we didn't already have one -- of what Schumer means by it.

"Bipartisan" = "do things our way"

Does anyone else feel like we're standing on the side of the road, hitching a ride to the nearest gas station, and being purposely splashed with mud by passing democrats? just wondering.

Resubmit and DOA. What a waste of time. As if the GOP majority will all of a sudden be able to show it's might.

This is ridiculous. As if they are going to grow a pair now that they are in the minority.

The Demon-crats are right about one thing: Bush is stupid. But they should be praising him, rather than demonizing him. He single-handedly destroyed the Republican majority.

I think the only proper thing for the president to do is to not send any nominations to the Senate. There is nothing they can do if he doesn't forward nominees. If John Paul Stevens goes tits up during the next two years - just leave it open.

On Bolton - he should transfer every person in the UN Mission at or above the level requiring Senate confirmation back to the State Department and then appoint Bolton to the next highest position.

Ole Charlie could use a good slap in the face.

"Five of the nominees in question were the subject of an angry exchange in August when Democrats charged that their selection was a sop to the president's conservative base."

But I thought the 'Rats won because conservatives crossed over and voted 'Rat in the last election.

It appears that the 'Rats have taken off their masks.
