At the current rate we'll all be saying hello to President Clinton in 2008 and this country will never be the same thereafter.

What I don't understand is why our so-called leaders are trying to hasten our demise. I almost think they WANT Hillary to win.

I became infuriated during the Katrina debacle. First of all, no one defended the President and made the case that he SAVED lives by insisting Nagin make that mandatory evacuation announcement. Then the pundits started in. My particular favorite was Newt Gingrich, that paragon of conservatism, saying the President had been totally ineffective and what we really needed was an economic Marshall Plan for the Gulf Coast.

Now, CH, to me an economic Marshall Plan means BIG government spending.

So, of course, egged on by the democrat media on the left and people on the right like Gingrich, the Senate passed that huge Katrina Aid bill, in a hurry and without proper safeguards.

Fast forward one year, and suddenly (surprise, surprise) we are getting all sorts of reports o fraud and waste from Louisiana.

And who should appear on Fox but good old Newt, to tell all of us rubes that "Of course, when government tries to do something this big, it isn't very effective and that's why things like this are better handled through the private sector and charity."

Gee, a complete 180 on what he had said a year before. And in BOTH instances it was used to criticize President Bush.

The word "opportunism" springs to mind.

Actually, the gender neutral part wasn't what was disturbing, it was the YOU guys part. Don't bother, I've figured out where you're coming from.

Yeah, newt has been running for president, and has damaged the party in doing so. Not to mention that he has no chance at all of getting through the primary or of raising enough money to campaign.

BTW, the Big gov/Small gov conservatism will not work as a issue unless we have a slow economy coupled with massive deficit spending. Currently we only have some deficit spending and are prosecuting a war globally in addition to terrorist defenses, Katrina, and the like.

The small G stuff just does not work when money is flowing like water...

It was not a issue this year, nor will it be or should it be in 08...In my humble opinion...No matter who we elect, there just is no imperative to be frugal these days....I think it unfortunate that so many seem to be upset about it.

The fact is, that as long as the economy grows at a good clip, government will grow right along with it. I usually get my frugal shoes out of the closet when the GDP drops to 1 or 2 percent for 4 consecutive quarters...

The public just won't buy into the issue, unless they feel it bad in the pocket. Otherwise, they want spending....as long as they benefit.

I am a fiscal conservative when it makes sense. Otherwise, I prefer to be a smart investor with the public money. This is essentially how Bush thinks...

I bet he will remember what the dems did to him. I don't look for much cooperation out of him this time around.

Smart investing is something like the Prescription Drug program, isn't it? It seemed to me (having dealt with two very sick parents) that it's cheaper to give elderly people free prescriptions for hypertension and cholesterol than to pay for treatment for stroke and heart attack, including quadruple bypass surgery. It's wise use of taxpayer money.

I believe you are right, spending isn't really an issue with most people, despite how much most of FR detests it. We are NOT the majority of Americans...heck we aren't even the majority of Republicans.

On the radio they are saying Lott won by ONE vote, beating out Lamar Alexander..

Yeah, no wonder, he voted for himself!

Trent Lott: Poster Girl for Term Limits

Can't we do anything to be rid of these out-of-touch, selfish, overpaid spineless ingrates who are the ruin of the Republican Party?

Yes, a pretty good example.

It was not just smart, but necessary. The dems were going to use the issue to begin their Nationalized medicine move, again...and we co-opted the issue, and put in a private program that has already realized huge savings, especially in the generic drugs. One of my prescriptions has dropped from $170.. to $65 bucks...I can't begin to tell you how much that helps. I have VA medical care, but they do not issue this particular drug and I had to get it at full price.

The dems plan was 4X more expensive and like I said, was totally Federal.

One plan or the other was going to be passed, and republicans did it right...IMO

Now, the Dems are going to go back and try to put that plan in, and take ours out to the trash. This, and many other things will be the cost of failure last week...

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the base is not 80% of the electorate, and if the republicans have decided to ignore THAT base, then they had better plan on being less than 20% of the senate in '08.

Here's what I've been wondering: all this talk about this "base" and that "base" and yet nobody has mentioned the "Bush base."

What's gonna happen when they finally pi$$ that "base" off?

I'm close after today.

The party did a pretty fair job of that last week...It was not enough for you?

Perhaps in 08, we can replace the rest of them with democrats....

I'll bet that an FR poll on Lott's suitability would be 80-20 against. It would be nice to have a stat like that available for our glorious "Republican" leaders to ponder.

We are all upset Howlin....

Things are going to change with the loss of power, and we need to wait until the dem honeymoon period is over to see what sort of politics replace the old, but I recall being in the minority not too long ago. I think you will brighten up a bit when we get back in the groove.
