Hey, nopardons.........maybe it's explained upthread, or I should already know, but how did it come about that the only two choices were Trent Lott and Alexander?

Who does the nominating of the candidates, and why didn't they choose someone 'fresher?' Any ideas?

The thing is, he's whip, not minority leader (and especially not MAJORITY leader). I also think that we can hold his feet to the fire by making sure that he keeps wandering senators like Graham and Hagel etc. ON the reservation instead of putting their faces on every TV show that will allow them to insult the president.

If Lott is #2, does that mean Lamar "Plaid Man Walking" will have edged him out for minority leader?

No problem. It just seems as though they might have come up with someone better if they wanted to regroup and come out swinging against the Rats.

I'm just waiting for Boehner to start referring to himself in third person. There has to be a gene or two shared here.

Chester is spineless. Turn off the lights in the Senate. They are worthless. Repealing the 17th Amendment is the ONLY hope.

I fully concur Marple...

I even had to turn off Limbaugh a few times during the past three years when I felt he was contributing to the madness...

Something to think about however, is the fact that these pundits often parrot the bulk of the E-mail they get on a issue. I thought rush was a exception, but even he is gullible to this. Just recently, the day after the election, he spent a good part of his program talking about the line of thinking that Conservatism did not lose the election. Yet on his show yesterday, he distanced himself from those comments, and said he bought into it at first and then changed his mind. he said the among other reasons was indeed conservatism and a couple of it's more controversial issues. This was a more honest response, IMO...I think he realized after the heat of the moment was over, that exit polling and losses of some districts pointed directly to conservative activism and some specific issues. I'll give him two points for being honest, but I won't give you a plug nickle for the likes of Hannity and others...They give me a headache.

The base imploded....One faction attacked another, and so one, but they continued it far too long, and straight through the election with the audacity to believe it would not affect the tally, and would improve it!

Well..............It sure did a number on us, and with the closeness of the numerical advantages we had in 2004, we could not afford to piss off a single voter....Not one!

Time to get back to Reagan's 11th commandment. "Thou shall not say unkind things about a fellow Republican."

I have a slightly differing take on the Lott pick.

I think Lott was picked to send a message to the base that they will not be reading any more E-mails for a while.....Senators can do this...and I think they blame the base for a variety of problems that they had to get through, including the Lott demotion to begin with.

It was the Lott issue that began a long string of battles between our elected congress critters and the conservative side of the political base. This culminated in the Immigration bill defeat, and in between was Meirs, Schiavo and the Port controversy among other more minor issues.

I don't think they will be too receptive to any more criticism from the base, largely because the immigration security only issue was a political loser, negative perceptions were created by Schiavo, and the president was weakened by Meirs and the ports.

The Senators are beginning to blame someone, and it is not themselves. Lott was a emotional choice to put things right.

Must be a Karma thing.....

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the base is not 80% of the electorate, and if the republicans have decided to ignore THAT base, then they had better plan on being less than 20% of the senate in '08.

Well you can kiss goodbye any real new blood and vigor in the Senate with Lott back. Think of all the bad press this will cause.
McConnell is okay for Leader if he really puts the fire to it.

The Dem leadership is just as corrupt and concerned with their own power and perks as ours is.

Notice all the old favorites heading back to the old chairs?

Vote for change, my ass.

"THEY" don't come up with anything. Those who want the job, whatever the position is, run for it. Then, the rest vote. Whoever gets the most votes wins.

I guess that NOBODY else wanted to be the whip.

*shrugs*

Lott back in a position of power. The "Gang of seven," still there in the Senate, and now Martinez as the head of the RNC.

Well dip me in sh!t, and call me stinky. Methinks we have lost our collective minds.

I believe it's correct that a member puts his or her own name forward for these positions. Apparently, Lamar Alexander and Trent Lott were the only two who did so. There's probably some interesting inside info as to why that was, but what is, is.

if the republicans have decided to ignore THAT base

They will...and you are probably right about 2008.

We will continue to bleed out, and likely lose the WH.

I don't see any sanity in the party until 2012, and it will likely have a different face.

Unfortunately, this revelation seems to be written in invisible ink, because the right wing of our base cannot see it. If they had, we would not have lost last week.

The truth is, we have some differing view within the party, but it takes the entire party to win. Conservatives did a nice job of driving the moderates into a state of rage, and they did not let up. Some evangelicals were poisoned by the media, and without any overriding issues, some did not show up.

Swing voter's perceptions of republican stupidity were continuously reinforced by internal party squabbles, and we lost the independents, or at least enough of them to matter when we could not afford to lose a single one.

WE need everyone, and as soon as you guys figure that out, get back to me. I'll be around the party, just as I have for over thirty five years.

Just keep saying it over and over again..."we need everyone to win. Without everyone we lose...Winning is not just important, it is everything, and sometimes you need to hold your tongue until after the election, no matter how important you think the issue or principle is...... You cannot do anything from a minority position but bitch....Losing sucks, so lets do it better next time, or we will lose again.
