(Washington-WTNH, Nov. 14, 2006 11:15 PM) _ As the re-count wraps up in Connecticut Joe Courtney is in Washington where new members of Congress are participating in freshman orientation.
Courtney declared himself the winner last week and has been preparing for his new post ever since.
Congressman elect Joe Courtney got the word that he had won the re-count late Tuesday night from his new boss.
Later he got bear hugs from Congressman John Larson and Congresswoman Rosa Delauro outside the Capitol, just a short time earlier during a reception and dinner for the new Congress at the U.S. Capitol the in coming speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi, gave Courtney the news. We met with him shortly after and he told us what that was like.
"First of all I feel very relieved because I'm a Red Sox fan, you've got to play the last out. But also to be in an historic room with a historic new class and to be part of this new governing majority that's going to change America, it's a very inspiring moment."
"And when she walked over and told you that you had won... what did you think?" asks Davis "I thought my staff had played a real dirty trick on me because I was the last to know!"
He says he's very respectful of the fact that so many people in the district did not vote for him and he intends to reach out to those voters over the coming weeks.
Connecticut (bad news) ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
Bad news ping... :-(
Hey Courtney, just because your a Redsox fan doesn't make up for the fact your a socialist Democrap.
Funny, the only Repub that survived here is the one who had the guts to make that statement about Kennedy.
He, he.
I was at the recount in Ledyard yesterday and there was some chat about Mansfield. It seems that college students were given extra credit at UConn for registering to vote and they registered about 2000 kids. I have no idea if there is any truth to the rumor but in such a close election you have to wonder if it made a difference. I'll follow up today.
With the election this close, we may be able to retake in 08.
Oh, well. You win some, you lose some.
Do Nutmeg State observers expect a rematch in 2008?
I have no evidence to back that up, but I DID hear many reports on the radio (news reports, local talk radio discussions) just before the election that democRAT Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz and other democRATs were bragging up a storm about how they registered a ton of new voters just before the 2006 election. Judging by their gleeful tone, it is obvious they registered a ton of new democRAT voters. I seem to remember they registered a bunch of students at CT colleges...
The "extra credit" at UConn part of the story sure sounds like a typically smarmy thing the democRATs would pull to get more votes. If that is true, those college Republicans (assuming there ARE any in CT) had better get busy before 2008!
Ahhh... that's right! Thanks for that, #1CTYankee. For some reason that reminder brightened what had been a particularly gloomy day for me today. :o)
I knew there was something I liked about Chris Shays...
I have no idea if Simmons will challenge Courtney in 2008. I'll be on the lookout for any articles about that potential rematch...
A true classic.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day,"
"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.
Loved it.
