I did my student teaching in an inner city school here in Kentucky. It wasn't near as bad as the article above, or even what you wrote, but it was bad enough. I was in a second grade classroom at the time, and was offered a third grade position. My first thought was, "Do they think I haven't seen what has gone on around here?" I turned it down.
I have been unable to find a permanent position since then but I don't regret turning the job down for one second.
I'm subbing in my own district now. Yesterday I faced my biggest problem yet! A fourth grader placed the class hermit crab on the lid of my coffee cup. LOL!
That's cute about the hermit crab. ;^) I'm lucky. So far my students haven't done anything hair-raising to me. Overall they seem to like me, but it is definitely the most stressful, exhausting, frustrating job I've ever had. And I've had plenty of other jobs, plus military experience. This does beat all for just draining the life out of you. Ah, but the vacations... the vacations...
Just got my copy... signed by the man himself. :-)

You're saupposed to mug him for it, on the grounds of a schoolhouse. :-)
