"without legislating social issues whatsoever."
DCBandita, you're buying into Schwarzenegger's bunk that conservatism used to be more like Libertarianism. It's not true, it's never been true, and no matter how much weak-kneed "moderates" say it, it's never going to be true. Both Barry Goldwater and especially, Ronald Reagan, the leading lights of the conservative movement, were always strong on social conservatism (Goldwater went a little soft in his old age on homosexuality, but that's because one of his grandkids was gay). As Reagan put it to an Evangelical meeting in 1980, "you can't endorse me, but I endorse you". You take away social issues from conservatism, and you kill conservatism, simply put. It becomes nothing more than right-leaning Libertarianism at that point.
While Rudy is a genuine hero, he is not a conserative by any means....pro-abortion, anti-gun...that's just not conservative. His Law and Order platform appeals to us, but on those major two issue, sorry, he's a no go. He has no chance south of the Mason-Dixon line to win primaries, and that's where you have to have most of your primary votes. Even John McCain has a better chance down south, and that's not saying much.
