So, perhaps I should have written:

"Libertarians: We stand for 20% of the Republican platform."

maybe:

"Libertarians: We'd like to be conservatives but our anti-drug war, pro-abortion, isolationist views prevent us from doing so."

would have better?

Then there's,

"Libertarians: Shoot like a redneck but smoke dope like a hippie."

You seem to be ignoring the difference between "L"ibertarians and "l"ibertarians. Libertarians are crazed wackos in a fringe third party, libertarians are a significant faction with the Republican party comprised of lazze faire, state rights types who care about fiscal issues and don't care too much about social issues (at least as far a government is concerned). "l"ibertarians have been Republicans for far longer than southern social conservatives. Regan himself said that libertarianism is the "heart and soul" of the Republican party.
