I don't know enough about how it works, but is it conceivable that Republicans could all vote for a R speaker and the dems would split their vote on Pelosi and someone else, causing a R speaker to win in a D controlled house?

No. The majority party votes for Majority Leader and the minority party votes for Minority Leader.

No...the Galen theory accepts a Democrat controlled Congress but has the GOP voting for the "lesser of two evil" Majority Leaders (i.e., Hoyer)...it could work, although it's unprecedented.
