If I told you that there was something in Washington called the Baker commission but didn't tell you what it was about, you still could probably name many of its members. If you are of a certain age, you might wonder, "Jim or Howard?" And you might have a quibble or two.
Where is Dick Holbrooke? Does Sandra Day O'Connor's new availability mean that Madeleine Albright is out of luck from now on? Are they sure that Larry Eagleburger is still alive? But Vernon Jordan is there, along with Ed Meese and Alan Simpson and Lee Hamilton. This is one torch that has not been passed to a new generation, although former Virginia senator and presidential son-in-law Charles Robb (age 67) is a fresh face in the pool of Washington Wise Men. Welcome, Chuck.

These guys will be as bad and as disappointing as the 7-11 Commission was. Kinsley usually sucks, but this is some of his most insightful writing ever.
"People like Baker always favor a bipartisan consensus.
They don't really believe in politics, which is to say they don't really believe in democracy."

Sandra Day O'Connor is the newest window dressing the liberals are going to constantly throw over their projects to give it that "bipartisan" veneer.
They pretend they don't know she's a liberal, because she shaves her pits.

Off the topic, but hey, I can't resist channeling John Riggins and asking when did Sandra Day go for the Brazilian look?

They do tend to get stale and stink after a while.

Being a Washington Wise Man does not require much wisdom.Well, if anybody should know that, it would be Michael Kinsley, huh?
BTW, why are there no MILITARY PEOPLE on this "commission?"

Hell, I thought it was Dubya's cabinet appointees until 2008. Send Kissinger and Baker in to "solve" the Mid-East crisis.

General Schwarzkopf and General Honore would have been egregiously honest and forthright in assessing the intellectual contributions of other members.

Yeah, I guess that's what this is down to. I read about who was on this panel and my thought was...

Well, then that makes two of you.

You don't like him? I've always found him very honest.
