MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The author of the bill that created the Tennessee Lottery says he may consider working on a bill to create a national lottery to pay of the national debt when he heads to Congress.

Democratic state Senator Steve Cohen will succeed Congressman Harold Ford Junior in Tennessee's 9th District.

He also has plans to support a raise in the minimum wage and a Medicaid waiver to allow more home health care for senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Cohen says he wants to become the first white member of the Congressional Black Caucus and a member of the House Progressive Caucus, but he has no plans of joining the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrat Caucus with colleagues John Tanner, Jim Cooper and Lincoln Davis.

Cohen says he'd also like to see the rarely used Pyramid arena in Memphis become a mid-America annex of the Smithsonian Institute.

Well, having the minimum wage increased does help ensure more money for this national lottery scheme. Maybe he will want subsidized lotto tickets for the homeless?

Starting a national lottery would put a lot of state lotteries out of business.

You wonder why the Dems are so infatuated with lotteries, don't you? All they do is transfer money from the poor to the rich.

Well.... $500 million would be the ultimate lottery prize for the winner. More money than you can spend in several lifetimes. Sign me up!

I had this idea a loooong time ago . The drawings would be held twice a year . The 4th of July and New Years Day. Lottery tickets would be $5.00 /each and be sold at terminals in the Post Office. The grand prize would be a potential trip on the Space Shuttle . The prize would be also transferrable if you wanted to sell it instead of taking the trip .

You can be sure that Steve Cohen will be making a lot of noise for socialistic issues, and probably will not shut up until he has whatever it is that he wants to accomplish.

How about a nationalized casino system as well? Stupid democrats think we can gamble and tax our way to prosperity.

The poor and foolish will play as many lotteries as they can each week. I have seen people cashing checks at the gas station and the first thing they buy are lottery tickets. It is a way of the government getting more money.

Lets put this on the list of bad ideas by Dems. While it may be a chance to 'tax' the poor, it is a bad idea to keep giving the government more and more streams of revenue. They spend all they get.

Well, that's one way to tax the poor. Cigarette and gas taxes being the others.

How about they just redirect a few dollars out of legitimate taxpayers pockets and surprise them with it (the jackpot)?

The Mega Millions put the VA out of business. National systems will just create large pools of money to rob by both parties.

Please tell me again why "gambling" (gaming for real money) via the internet is somehow wrong, yet the same government may run a gambling operation to benefit itself.

Seems like the issue is control and taxes and not the moral hazards of gambling.

See how far the Welfare Clause has been stretched yet again.

Actually, not that bad an idea. Might as well have a little fun doing it although your chances were a lot better with the old illegal policy games.

If the 'Rats could ever balance a Trillion dollar budget with a lottery, they'd be immediately then increasing spending to 1.2 Trillion.
