He must have realized he was detected. A US SSN may or may not have tracked and pinged him to the surface. No sub CO wants to be on the surface at all, let alone near a US task force. It won't be a lonely voyage back to port for that crew. I chased Soviet subs in my wonder bread years and one thing's for sure - you'll never hear the whole story.
