Voters eighty-six Bing's Prop. 87
Variety ^ | 11-12-06 | Gabriel Snyder

Financier contributed nearly $50 mil of his own money to campaign.

While the defeat of Proposition 87 disappointed folks like Robert Redford, Julia Roberts and Ben Affleck, it probably stung producer Steve Bing the most -- at least in terms of his wallet. A real estate heir who has put his money to work financing movies as well as political campaigns, Bing contributed nearly $50 million of his own money to the Yes on 87 campaign, supporting a California ballot initiative that would have taxed oil producers to raise $4 billion for alternative energy research.

But after such an expensive loss, will he continue to be the go-to guy for Democratic fundraising?

Bing himself is notoriously press-shy ("We never comment on anything," says his rep Paul Bloch). But when Bing spoke with Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party two days after the election, he was reportedly in good spirits. "He's very enthusiastic and spirited. I didn't notice one negative tone in his voice," Torres says.

The way Bing sees it, the chair added, the money spent on the Yes on 87 campaign has pushed energy up on the agenda for the newly elected Democratic Congress.

Keeping Bing happy is an important task for Democratic fundraisers since he is one of the most reliable big-ticket check writers. When the DNC was looking to build a new headquarters in D.C. in 2002, Bing ponied up $8 million.

Not only the celiberals mentioned here, but Bubba himself was on TV, every 15 minutes the last week of the campaign. He kept telling us 'if Brazil can become energy independent, California can lead the way in the USA'. Really glad to see this one go down in defeat.

All we'd have to do is burn down our rain forest and plant sugarcane...

Whatever happened to so-called "Campaign Finance Reform" which was supposed to even the playing field and give the 'little people' more of a voice in government?

Oh, I forgot, CFR only added to the power of deep pocket special interest individuals and to hell with the 'little people' or their little minded fantasy of fair and democratic government. Me stoopit .....

"... on 87 campaign, supporting a California ballot initiative that would have taxed oil producers to raise $4 billion for alternative energy research."

With all the movie industry big names involved, do you think we could persuade them to join us in a Proposition to tax movie studios and performers to raise money to develop better movies?

This is the same lunatic who broke up with one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood right after getting her pregnant, isn't it?

Yeah, Liz Hurley. He denied that he was the father of their son. Liz got a DNA test that proved otherwise.

Even Californians aren't dumb enough to vote themselves higher prices at the pump.

But but but they promised us that it wouldn't raise pump prices.

Just exactly how dumb do they think we are?

I encourage Der Bingle to keep writing those fifty million dollar checks for losing political causes. Eventually he will have run through his entire trust fund and have to go work at Starbucks.

California is grossly liberal. But even the likes of Julia Roberts can't brainwash dems pocket books at the pump? Don't tell me Californians actually thought for themselves instead of having movie stars make up their minds for them!
(because movie stars live such a real life, they really know how the rest of us feel)Gag me with a silver spoon!

I'm sure they'll be running to embrace a concept rejected by a huge majority. Sounds like a weiner.

My friend told me she was considering voting for it after Clinton's commercials. I told her it was because they knew all the Democrat suckers would do anything he says. We haven't spoken since(3 wks)but at least it didn't pass.

Voters hate higher taxes. Tax increases LOST in Blue State California, across the board, by landslide margins. This wasn't a vote for liberalism.

However, the infrastructure bonds passed, and a bond is a tax, merely disguised, on property owners. IMHO, only those who will be subjected to a tax should be allowed to vote on it. But with bonds, we have taxation without representation.
