WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.
"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.
Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."
Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.
"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.
Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.
Thanks. Happy to be here.
I will tell why Rumsfled resigned. He did not resign because he was pushed under the bus by the President. In the past President Bush refused his resignation twice. This time since the traitors control both Houses of Congress even by a slim majority they were going to parade Rumsfeld like a criminal from one Inquisition to another. Rumsfled did not want to waste his valuable time as a secretary of defense during a war answering the Inquisition tribunal of democrats, therefore he resigned.
Thanks.
I just hope that the democrats do not cause another disaster. Then millions in Asia died after we ran away.
This time the war will continue on to the US soil.
Isn't there something wrong with this picture?
When the Dems were in the minority they filibustered and obstructed everything.
The Republicans should do the same thing. With the Dem's bare majority in the Senate, the Republicans should be able to keep it from even coming up for vote. Or if it passes, Bush should veto it -- the Dems definitely don't have a veto proof majority.
I hope the Republicans will learn from how the Dems behaved, when they were a minority and NOT allow the Dems to force disastrous decisions, which the Iraqi withdrawal would be.
Anything the Dems can do to make Iraq resemble Vietnam and weaken America; they will do.
And our enemies know this. Both our enemies and Dems want a weaker America.
Is this a strategy for victory in Iraq?
But the two situations are entirely different. Anyone who lived through the 60's knows that the peace movement was a real force then, the Congress was held in a vise grip by the Dems, and the the liberal media had no counterweight (like THIS!).
They will NOT succeed in abandoning our troops again......no matter what Biden and Levin say.
I've wondered that as well.
Big talk may have won them votes back into power, but are they STUPID enough to actually cut and run when they KNOW it is not the thing to do right now.
It seems to me another 6 months should be plenty of time to start withdrawing some troops. But, I don't like timetables.
And, I don't like being boxed into such a proposal.
The president is still commander-in-chief, and he can keep the war going if necessary. What will Congress do? Cut off his funding? The president could still keep it going by borrowing or something in that situation.
Agree 100%.
Well, well, well.
The party of cut and run is determined to run. All those young lives for nothing. And what allies will trust us again? None. And I don't blame them.
The jihadists are laughing their a**es off. And so is China.
I hope that you are correct.
Having us in the internet, etc. is very important. Then the Slimes, like Walter C, could easily sway public opinion.
But the encouragement comes from the facts, I think......which I have stated before. They just don't have the power to destroy the military that they had during Viet Nam. There are too many counter weights............like US, right here on FR. :)
But they will not win, Peach. They may have a momentary puff of ego (both the terrorists and the Democrats), but neither will win.
We are still fighting !

Even better, no Iraqi with any sense of self-preservation will help the U.S. with information or whatever. Look for massive desertions from what passes for the Iraqi army.
But don't you get it, we wanted to send a strong message showing our dissatisfaction with how the GOP was handling the borders.
