WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.
"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.
Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."
Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.
"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.
Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.
Like steponallofus said after clinton got elected on promises; "he kept the promises he meant to keep".
A promise from a rat is like leaf in the wind.
No insult to leaves intended.
"I have butted heads with this poster too."
Hey, numbnuts. First, you obviously didn't leave a lasting impression on me and, second, have the decency to include me if you're going to talk about me.
This is all talk, IMO. Peacenik nostalgia....
LOL Who is that guy? The Mouse that Roared?
These rats are gonna be the death of me yet...lol...I have the utmost faith in our CinC and his commitment to the troops....but I remember what the rats did to our troops in VN and I don't want that to happen again.
Actually, I was trying to point out that you said 4-6 weeks when the article said 4-6 months. No biggy.
Correction. The public voted for 500 congressmen.
That, plus the fact that the 'peace movement' doesn't exist. Americans don't want our kids to die, but they don't want withdrawal without victory either.
The RATS can't win this time.
He can't appropriate funds, but I don't think he would go for cut and run
You're voting my off the island? Me? Mr/Mrs personality?
Otay, but fwust you have to pwamus to weave my wittle buddies, Worters, awone.
Welcome to FreeRepublic Miss Didi.
Prayers for our troops and for our nation..May the Lord guide the dems to remember WHO is Commander in Chief..They can deny funds..That is their power...I pray they don't pull a Viet Nam.
President can allocate emergency funding from anywhere in the budget to fund the troops.
What happened in Vietnam ?
Did Nixon not allocate emergency funding to fund the troops ?
Try not to be disheartened chgogal. We get that way too and then one of the wounded soldiers we know will call us up, email or invite us to eat and before you know it, we're bouncing off the walls because of his "can do" way of looking at things. Now this is great, I've got "kids" in their 20s with terrible disfigurements and disabilities comforting an old man of 64! ...and they're the ones grinning!
Well, they teach us a lot don't they? They are a treasure to be around. Like I said on the other post, some have "dive-bombed" a bit in their lives but they also reflect that "can do" attitude by continuing to struggle back on their feet, not give in, like one of them said, they occasionally need a helping hand up, not a handout.
This obviously comes from TRADOC (training doctrine) of assessing the situation, adapting to the conditions and changes and overcoming your enemy, something we need to adapt as well politically.
LOL! Well said!
I wish I had your faith, ohio....I'm a little gun shy when it comes to politicians and our military.
