WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.
"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.
Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."
Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.
"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.
Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.
As I said before, humans write articles, and, as one of my protagonists said, no one should use a single source for anything.
Did they really say, 4-6 weeks?
Hillary won't support it... but she won't do a thing to stop it either. She will use this Dhimmi victory wisely.
Add to that the rats constant efforts to disarm us looks like they are planning to sacrifice us too to their agenda when we get attacked terrorist style here.
There is a huge difference between privately telling the Iraqis it is not open-ended and PUBLICLY doing it. The first has already been done anyway.
The bill got THREE votes. They're all talk, no courage.
Joe Lieberman is our friend in the Senate and committed to the troops. They do not have the votes to pull us out, and if they DO vote to do it, it will be vetoed by the Commander in Chief.
I am obviously nervous about this since Eric will be going back before the Congress returns to Republican hands, but I truly don't think they can succeed in harming our troops with this President.
We just need to keep praying for him as he leads. He's not going to let our sacrifice come to naught, mystery. He's not.
The left said Iraq was Vietnam. They are making it Vietnam.
Okay, you said don't fall for it. Ya got me on that one. I checked and so did you, right?
How lucky you are to be married to such an individual! ;)
I agree with this, "I hope some of these idiots remember that we transferred sovereignty to Iraq already...we cannot arbitrarily tell them to split up their country." I would also like to say that partition has not worked out great, especially in Palestine. Lets forget that! They are carving up Yugoslavia again, and that will be a disaster, too.
They think nobody sees through their idiocy and projection.
With the slow death of their favorite media the pendulum is swinging against them, finally.
I have NO doubt that the Dems will try to change the 60 votes rule..
And, with Arlen Specter, John Warner, Graham, McCain, all (except Specter) in the Gang of 14...I bet THEY will NOT fight the dems over that.
This will be a good test for McCain...if he expects to get the GOP nomination for POTUS..it is time for him to put up for the GOP...and quit catering to the dems.
Or is this annoying behavior, based on no particular value, reserved just for me?
You mean months.
Reuters quotes at least Levin.
The RATS made noise about Iraq, but the American people do NOT want withdrawal before victory......and so do the RINOS. (And remember that the Lamont wing of the party was soundly defeated, even in liberal Connecticut).
Many of the new dem members were elected on moderate platforms (I know they will be harassed by the leftist leaders, but do they want to immediately go against what they campaigned and won on?).
This 'immediate withdrawal' garbage is for show for the left wing extremists in the party. It will go NOwhere.
Thanks. Appreciate the warning.....
I'll leave you alone. You seem too tender.
Now instead of Eugene McCarthy taking pacifism on the campaign trail, we have McCain and his #1 issue is the WOT. That will help.
It is not a matter of "if" the Muzzies attack us again inside the country, but when.
The DUmmies will then cry that Bush did not protect us...
The New York Times will say it is Bush's fault...
even though the Dummies have fought against the foreign wiretaps, the terrorists money tracking programs, etc.
I just prefer to discuss issues and not swat at annoying little gnats like you.
Now go away, child......the grown ups are trying to talk.
