Start U.S. Iraq withdrawal in 4-6 months: Democrats

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.

"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.

Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."

Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.

"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.

Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.

That's what I thought I clarified for you earlier.

Let me try again....

There will be a plethora of articles like this one, slanted pro-left, that will discourage pro-troops, understand-the-mission folks who think that now that the Dems are in control (sort of) of the Senate, that the Iraq policy will change and that we will pull our troops home before the mission has been accomplished.

There will be a constant drumbeat from the left that will dishearten many good people around here.

The point of my original post was that we should not fall into their trap.

I'm sorry that I troubled you with my call for strength and encouragement against leftists. Should I not do it again? You think?

Lieberman votes no. So do one or two other Dems. Chaffee is gone. Probably only one Rep. will vote yes. Bush wins.

Yup.
How they gonna make Lieberman vote to stop the war in Iraq then?
This is why it was vital to back Lieberman over Lamont, just in case we lost the Senate.

"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy,"

Yeah, from potential victory to certain defeat.

The rats want this over by 08 because they can't manage the WOT and this will be their 08 campaign issue.

President Bush better hold firm on this. My hubby spent 15mos over there and returns in 07, my son is currently over there and if we withdraw all this was for nought!

This is deja vu all over again.....God Help us All.

So Biden or Levin make a public statemet for the record and Reuters shouldn't publish it and/or I should ignore it if they do. I got it now.

Great image and isn't that the truth. The IDIOTS and COWARDS that voted donk, the party of jackasses, have now endangered ALL OF US. Anyone that is an American has a very large target painted on them and our enemies do not care if their victims are liberals or conservatives. The voters that abandoned the GOP are going to pay hell now, courtesoy of Pelosi and Reid retreating from the battle. Thanks dumbasses!

People are way overrating the power of Congress to influence foreign policies.

Don't forget Vietnam, especially why we REALLY lost.

We had progressed to the point that South Vietnam was able to sustain itself without direct U.S. military support. They were doing very well on their own, UNTIL Congress cut off the funds to resupply the South Vietnamese military. This guaranteed a North Vietnamese victory.

President Ford was too weak to stand against Congress, and the cowardly deed was done.

Aside: When pulling out our troops was not enough ("Cut and Run") to ensure defeat, Congress went even further. There was no hope after they cut the funds for South Vietnam's military resupply. Millions died as a result, and their deaths are the direct fault of the U.S. Congress. I was in the Air Force at the time. I was furious then, and I still am.

There is an old saying: The victors get to write the history. So it is no surprise that this little point is generally left out of the "history" textbooks our children read in high school. None of my four children were ever taught the truth about Vietnam in school.

What an odd trouble maker you are.

Are you getting some sort of twisted satisfaction at arguing for the sake of argument and for no purpose whatsoever?

What a strange person.

It's NOT going to happen, mystery. They don't have the power.

Strange I am, but that doesn't change the fact that you haven't shown me why I shouldn't buy the Reuters article.

I have butted heads with this poster too. Just ignore him or her and they will crawl back into the spider hole they came from. This poster is the type of person that has little to no friends because they constantly rebut and argue and make fools of themself with everyone, not just here.

That would happen to coincide with the next scheduled emergency request for special funding for Iraq operations. Just coincidence, no doubt. If they were serious, they would cut off funding now, but it appears they will wait and then go for reduced emergency funding. Who knows what level emergency funding will be? Down 10%, down 50%, down 100%? Gestures and appearances count with these Ds, substance does not.
