This has been circulating on the web for a few months now, and it's been checked out by a fair few people including myself.

Everything the Prime Minister, in particular, says in public is recorded and available for checking. It's not quite as true for his other Ministers, but it's pretty close. And if these things had been said, they would be on record.

I would also say that there are statements made in the 'additions' to this article that it is highly unlikely that the Prime Minister would ever say, and which strongly suggest to me that the additions come from an American source, unfamiliar with the subtleties of conservative politics in Australia.

We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language

It is very unlikely the Prime Minister would have referred to Spanish, first or even at all in such a list. Spanish is very rarely heard in Australia - we do not have a large Hispanic community and those that are here have largely integrated very easily. Greek, Italian, Vietnamese and Chinese would be far more likely to be referenced than any other language groups.

If the Southern Cross offends you

It is far more likely that the Prime Minister would say "If the Union Flag offends you" or "If the Union Jack offends you". Australia's flag is made up of the Union Flag of the United Kingdom, the Federation Star, and the Southern Cross, and to most Australian conservatives it is the Union Flag that is the most important part, followed by the Federation Star, with the Southern Cross coming third. The Southern Cross is a symbol more beloved of Australian socialists.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life

John Howard would be unlikely to use the word 'Pledge' here. He'd use the word 'oath'.

Australia currently has a Pledge of Allegiance, rather than an Oath, but that is because the previous Labor government changed it. It hasn't been changed back because the fact of its existence is more important than the precise word, but to most Australian conservatives, we do not pledge - we give oath.
