In his victory speech Tuesday night to a confetti-swamped crowd at the Beverly Hilton, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a message for the rest of the Republican Party after its worst defeat in decades.
Follow "the California way," he said. "We are proving to the nation that there is another way to go, a better path to solve problems."
Schwarzenegger's landslide victory in a largely Democratic state illustrates the growing power of moderate candidates and the electoral appeal of bipartisanship, and it could contain important lessons for Republicans and Democrats as they seek to position themselves in the future, analysts and politicians said.
"If I was a Republican National Committee chair, I would hire Arnold out and teach Republicans what is necessary to put together a winning campaign," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political analyst at the University of Southern California. "He really is the poster boy of what Republicans have denied for so long. Elections are won from the center."

You and I are on a different wavelenghth tonight. I'm not understanding many of your posts. Are you saying that what some call "conservative" is to believe in everything you once opposed? If so, I understand.
Earlier tonight, it was actually suggested that the majority of California Republicans might support "Record spending increases, global warming regulation, more gun control, leftist judicial appointments, minimum wage hikes, irresponsible borrowing, fee/tax increases, taxpayer funded subsidies for Green initiatives, advancing the homosexual agenda, etc.". There seem to be many here who would like to distort the meaning of both Conservatism, and Republicanism.
Translation:
And let's protect the California dream for all people residing in Califoirnia.
Again, a not so gentle reminder that Schwarzenegger's remarks in Mexico were aimed at Pelosi to urge her to prioritize disassembling our immigration laws.

Bless ya all, it's always nice to know someone is always keeping the old camp fire going while others are away taking care of business and vacations too.
I'm gonna be winging it back home saturday, time sure flies in paradise.. and so do dollars.
I, for one, can't wait to see what will be proposed as a budget next year and how large a deficit will ensue ..
Aloha and G'Nite from Kona..
see ya all soon. :-)
I think, more accurately, FO's pitch is: To be a winning Republican is to believe in everything you once opposed.
You're both wrong. It's "don't believe in anything; someone might hold you to it. Just win, baby."
I'll give Arnold credit for being pro-business and holding the line on taxes. The Democrats are basically leaving the center open for Republicans on the environment. We'd do well to grab it. I don't think Arnold's positions on social issues are an ingredient for national success though.
ROFL!
It is also useful for smoking out the fellow travelers and useful idiots; sort of a litmus test.
So true. I like it because you get an almost first-hand view of the latest spin, tall tales and talking points, and just how far they will go to justify things.

?
Apparently, they were wrong about that.
And on that note, g'nite all.
Already done.
There is a long history of animosity between South and Angelides. Dating back to 1993, South and Angelides have jousted politically. That year, Angelides, then chair of the state Democratic Party, was considering a bid for lieutenant governor against Gray Davis, a South client. South circulated poll numbers to help shove Angelides out of the race early, but accuses Angelides' campaign of countering by spreading salacious rumors about Davis.
The issues in California are rarely as you describe (rigid, puritanical, etc). The major issues have little to do with religion and everything to do with fiscal responsibility, property rights, and environmental sanity. Arnold is governing in a liberal fashion, bypassing the Republican legislators and collaborating solely with Democrats. As an example, his landmark Global Warming legislation, touted as a "Bipartisan" accomplishment, was opposed by 100% of Republican legislators--not a sole R would support the economically destructive bill.
You rail about the president and open borders, expanded government and excessive spending. It would behoove you to educate yourself on Arnold's record on the same subjects. His actions probably exceed those of President Bush. If you truly hold "National security, low taxes, smaller government, individual freedom" as the highest priorities, there is little logic in your support of Arnold.
Try researching the facts and then posting.
Had the line read talks about holding the line on taxes, the post would have been more credible.
BTW, is Steve Poizner a RINO or a Conservative ? I'm momentarily forgetting.

I think there's a big open opportunity for Republicans that we need to grab. Everybody's for conservation, clean water and air, ending our dependence on foreign oil, etc. Suburban voters and independents like being pro-environment, but are also reasonable. The Democrats are so far left on this though, that the center's wide open. We lose if the perception is that we're in the pocket of big oil.

LOL... I'm just trying to get to the end of the thread and go to bed! I can't quite get there though!
Aloha! Have a safe trip!
Is there even a passing familiarity with what transpired between August and September 2003 in California?
What, prey tell, were Schwarzenegger's promises during that period?
I'll give you ahead start. Here's a paraphase of the first promise:
Rebuild California's economy so we can support our (social) programs.
