Schwarzenegger Implores GOP To Follow Script of His Sequel: Court the Center
Washington Post ^ | Nov. 10, 2006 | John Pomfret

In his victory speech Tuesday night to a confetti-swamped crowd at the Beverly Hilton, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a message for the rest of the Republican Party after its worst defeat in decades.

Follow "the California way," he said. "We are proving to the nation that there is another way to go, a better path to solve problems."

Schwarzenegger's landslide victory in a largely Democratic state illustrates the growing power of moderate candidates and the electoral appeal of bipartisanship, and it could contain important lessons for Republicans and Democrats as they seek to position themselves in the future, analysts and politicians said.

"If I was a Republican National Committee chair, I would hire Arnold out and teach Republicans what is necessary to put together a winning campaign," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political analyst at the University of Southern California. "He really is the poster boy of what Republicans have denied for so long. Elections are won from the center."

Republicans may not like the message, but you can't argue with victory.

There is such a thing as a Phyrric victory. What good is a Schwarzenegger victory if he couldn't (wouldn') bring other Republicans along with him?

Giuliani is further to the left than most Democrats!
I believe it is important to win and that it was stupid to let the democrats win the house and senate, but you don't seem to have any political soul. People who do whatever it takes to win without regards to a core set of principles have a name: psychopaths.

Let me understand this.

The FairOpinion account shills for a Democrat look alike on FreeRepublic and the liberal wins.

Now the FairOpinion account is urging conservatives to spread the Democrat gospel that only liberals can win and supporting liberal causes and liberal policies is a key to success in the Republican Party.

Why would any Republican, let alone a conservative Republican, want to pursue the support of Schwarzenegger, obviously a traditional Democrat, who found it convenient to form a parasitic relationship with Duf Sundheim because of Sundheim's weak character and poor management skills.

Next the FairOpinion account will tell conservatives that it was good for the CaGOP that Schwarzenegger campaigned against his team mate in the 11th hour of the election or that Schwarzenegger was right when he hailed the Democrat victory in the US Congress.

I am shaking my head in disbelief. Am I on the DU forum? Is the FairOpinion account really Nancy Pelosi?

Simple. Do you want to win, or do you want to lose?

If it doesn't matter who or what I'm voting for, just that they win, what's the point in voting at all?

Schwarzenegger is an a$$. His politics are liberal European. As a politician, he has no future. He is nothing but a lame duck RINO. Don't waste your time listening to him.

It seems that "political soul" only accomplished to put the worst enemies of the country and the American people, the Democrats, into power.

It is pathetic that the "political soul" of many is focused on getting rid of RINOs, and handing power to the Dems, instead of being focused on getting rid of the Dems, THEN worry about RINOs.

Courting the center is like trying to keep two wives happy. Both knowing where the knives are kept in the kitchen.

AND

When you stand in the middle of the road you can get hit from both directions.

You usually have TWO, count them, TWO choices. You look at the AVAILABLE TWO choices and vote for the one closest to what you believe in. If you don't, you end up voting for the one who is a complete antithesis of everything you believe in.

Are you happy that the Dems won both the House and the Senate?

Absolutely right about that. Put out the big fires first. Plug the big holes in the dam first.

(where to start?!?)

Where did you get this belief that only liberals can win? Just for future reference, if the Washington Post is promoting something, its gotta be good for liberals not conservatives.

My immediate sensate reaction to your comment was to think of Orwell's pigs. But that is just too hormonal, and no doubt wrong headed. Diplomacy just isn't your bag is it?

I can't see much difference between those politicians' core principles and those of Chafee.

You're doing better than me. I'm having a hard time finding any core principles of those you mention.

Other than LOSING and handing over the country to the Democrats, what exactly do YOU believe in?

Smaller government. Spending in the black. Reducing the budget and the fees, taxes, bonds, tariffs that feed it. Funding essentials like road maintenance before social boutique programs, and out of the money already taxed from us. Spending the money on citizens and legal residents, and not on illegal occupants. The whole Constitution, including the 2nd, 5th, and 10th Amendments. The sanctity of human life and preference to its needs over animals. The sanctity of marriage, family and the social order built on it. Following the Rule of Law, with said laws made by the People, through direct means or their legislators and not by Judges. The protection of our country from foreign threats. Property rights. Tort reform.

Shall I go on? Wait; let me predict your response: "How will you get those things under the Dems?" Answer: I won't get them under an Arnoldoid "centrist" government either. That's why I vote conservative.

Conservatives are at best 40% of the electorate. You still need at least 11% of the middle to get elected. Actually more because the puritans who think the conservative candidate is only 99.8% conservative thus in there eyes a heathen will end up voting constitution or libertarian and what not so really you could end up needing 15-20% of the middle just to pull off a squeaker of a election. Conservatives do not get elected by conservatives alone, they must get the votes of the "vital center" to win.
