Perhaps the biggest reason for a draft is to break the military forever as a bastion of efficiency and conservatism.

This time the draft will be 50-50 male and female.

Just as the immigration law of 1965 spelled the beginning of the end for America, the new draft would change the military in a way that 10 or 20 years from now, we would not recognize it.

Part of the problem, the media and popular culture in general have worked the citizenry over so bad, the very idea of a draft is unthinkable, and not just politically. I know, because I was once young and stupid, and when dad suggested the military I thought it was a crazy idea. "They brainwash you, Dad.."

After I joined, I got out and went to University on the GI Bill. I rapidly figured out who was really "brainwashed" - civilians. I said nuts to the University - and went back in the .mil, there was a truly "multi-cultural" society - where competence is rewarded, not punished, and those beneficial traditions of duty, honor, country, etc - are upheld.

Don't want to turn this into a "boys vs girls"thing. I regret not enlisting in the Air Force right after high school back a couple of deecades ago, and I'm a "girl". I would have had a good disciplinary background and probably been able to pursue medical career training. and I danged sure would have loved to have flown one of those awesome fighters.(my niece got to do this) Do not assume all us gals are wimps, or Rosie O'Donnell types.
See my post to Palehorse above.
