DJ 8 US House Races Still Uncalled; Vote Officials Drag Feet

WASHINGTON (AP)--Eight House races remain without winners after Tuesday's election, and some state officials aren't rushing to end the disputes.

Rep. Deborah Pryce, a member of the House Republican leadership, is ahead in her central Ohio race by 3,536 votes. In the Columbus, Ohio-area, elections officials are delaying the count of more than 9,000 provisional ballots by one day so it doesn't disrupt the much-vaulted Ohio State-Michigan football game on Nov. 18.

Elections officials in that district will start counting Nov. 19.

Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, who called Democratic Rep. John Murtha a coward, is ahead of her challenger by 2,862 votes.

Republican Rep. Barbara Cubin, who threatened to slap her wheelchair-bound Libertarian opponent after a debate, is ahead by fewer than a thousand votes in her Wyoming contest.

Of the eight uncalled races, only one - Joe Courtney's challenge to Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in Connecticut - gives a Democratic challenger the lead. In that race, Courtney is ahead by a scant 167 votes. Almost a quarter of a million votes were cast.

In Georgia, first-term Democratic Rep. John Barrow, facing a rematch against former Republican Rep. Max Burns, leads by fewer than 600 votes.

In Washington state, the count in a suburban Seattle district was delayed by heavy flooding, leaving incumbent Republican Rep. Dave Reichert ahead of challenger Darcy Burner three days after voting ended.

North Carolina Republican Rep. Robin Hayes' race against Larry Kissell is separated by 449 votes, and New Mexico Rep. Heather Wilson's race leads Democrat Patricia Madrid by about 1,600 votes.

oops! Where's JD Hayworth? His opponent ahead by about 6000 votes but there are about 250,000 uncounted ballots out there.

Well, football games are important. And it gives them more time to throw a ballot box or two into the car trunk while everyone is focused on the game.

I was wondering yesterday how many races were still undecided.

I'm going to check to see how the MSM called each race.

Barrow is a slimy sleazebag. Every commercial he ran either lied about his record (he tries desperately to sound like a conservative) or lied about Max Burns' record. Truly disgusting.

And on Wed he was on the radio calling for an end to negative campaigning. Scumbucket!

Burns did his fair share of negative ads also. But Barrow's ads were the pits.

Jill Derby, running for Senate here in Nevada NEVER once stated in any of HER ads that she was a Demorat.

She kept stating she was a "conservative", that she would "cut taxes" and "end the death tax", etc. In rural Nevada (which is overwhelmingly Republican)- where she is a 4th generation resident, she carefully lied about how much she could do- as a freshman Senator no less- and she NEVER did tell the voters in HER ads what party affiliation she had.
I didn't pin it down until my sample ballot came in the mail, about 4 weeks before 11/7.

If Pete does retire and not one again in 08 I think it will be Wilson's time to move on up.

Forgive my mounting frustration over elections in general, but I believe it's time to put this issue in the proper legal position. It should be an offense immediately punishable by termination and/or incarceration to either negligently or maliciously act in such a way as to affect the ability of a voter to cast his/her vote or for that vote to be accurately counted. This goes for "oops" blunders like sending only 150 ballots to a precinct, "mysteriously" having only one operating machine in a heavily Republican precinct, threats, intimidation, etc. etc..

We need to take the profound consequences of these behaviors much more seriously, in my opinion. We have just witnessed how critically important each and every vote can be in multiple major elections. Anything remotely resembling vote fraud, tampering, interference or negligence should be met with harsh action.

The right to vote is serious. Messing with it should be serious.

Well the good news is that it appears that Republicans are ahead in most of them.

I also did not see Wilson from NM mentioned.

I heard she declared victory, does anyone know if her opponent conceded?
