Key Republican joins Dems opposing Bolton nomination (WHY DID GOP WASTE ONE DIME ON CHAFEE?)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.

A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over.

. . . .

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.

Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.

"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.

"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."

The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

. . .

Bolton's appointment will expire in January unless the Senate confirms him, and the probable next chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee says approval is unlikely.

"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, who is set to become the committee's chairman and control the agenda in January.

In any relationship, the thing that initially attracts you to the other person, is ultimately the thing that winds up turning you off. For example, if you meet a girl and you fall for her because she's attractive and outgoing, you'll probably wind up hating her because she's a flirt. If you meet a man who's funny with a devil may care attitude, you'll probably wind up breaking up because he's never serious about anything and can't commit.

And that's the problem with Bush. We loved him because he was strong and decisive...and now we don't like him because he's controlling and inflexible and seemingly unwilling to face the facts about the people he has to work with. I can't wait for 2008.

I've been too busy this week to listen to Rush. He's the only national figure who gets the picture. What has he been saying about things?

Got no clue. I like Rush, I just don't have the chance to listen. I am trying to climb the ladder like a lot of other folks. Climbed from poor to middle class. Pretty proud of that. Now, I am working on climbing to the upper class. I guess that does not give me the chance to listen to Rush.

BTW: I love Capitalism. Capitalism created more millionaires while Communism and Socialism created more deaths. God Bless America.

She said that anybody who helped the Republicans will not get a chairmanship regardless of seniority.

They might have the last laugh...she's not Speaker yet! What if those good old boys decide to put in someone else who's not so....controversial? It's by no means unanimous and would be perhaps, a tad humiliating (..and Hillary is standing by with narrowed eyes).

"Can the RINO's be told to leave the party? They are going to vote the other way anyway."

I am not certain of the mechanics....but the RNC can be asked to cut funding the campaigns of those that refuse to honor the party platform, if I'm not mistaken.

"WHY DID GOP WASTE ONE DIME ON CHAFEE?"

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Republicans didn't want Democrat party hack Sheldon Whitehouse in the U.S. Senate.

You're right, Lincoln Chafee has admitted to having used cocaine in the past. I haven't heard about any past LSD use.

Whatever he has or hasn't used, it's clear that he isn't what one would call cerebral.

Don't forget to blame the people who donated all that $ that the people who run the party can dole out to their favorite candidates - RINOs. Conservatives raise their own $ from conservatives; RINOs run their campaigns on the $ that conservatives and others donate to these umbrella groups who dole it out because nobody else is going to give them anything.

Interesting that most Freepers adore Cheney but despise the man who chose him for Secretary of Defense.

Go figure!

Gonna throw himself on the floor and beat his little heels, I guess, and if that doesn't get enough attention he'll probably hold his breath too. I'm glad he is going out....for good I hope.

I figure that even a country-club RINO like GHWB (who I do NOT despise, just for the record) can, like the blind squirrel, find some good nuts from time to time.

"We need to create a Nebraska-centered blog for conservatives that will bring the state of Nebraska together."

Uncle Vlad, you have just connected the hammer to the nail. EVERYBODY needs to get busy and create a conservative website for their state so that conservative-only candidates can connect up with their supporters at the next election cycle. We can supply money, walk the precincts and man the telephones to get out the vote. Remember if we don't contribute to the conservatives of our choice, they have to accept help from lobbyists.

You don't really follow the poliics of this because the GOTV effort was very successful in a lot of districts. Only thing is, they didn't vote for Republicans.

You are right. There was a lot of GOTV effort. What happened was we got out the vote for the opposition.

Chafee is a miserable little worm and I'm very happy the RINO was kicked out of office. All this amounts to is Chafee flipping off conservatives. In his rush to pay us back, he has forgotten that he's going down with us. When we lose our freedoms, he'll lose them right along with us. He's irrelevant now, and no one will remember him!!
