I’m trying, and failing, to think of a different way that President Bush could have responded to the reporter’s question without divulging that he might accept the resignation of Sec Rumsfeld. It would be unthinkable to divulge it publicly without telling Rumsfeld first. Bush responded in a way necessary to preserve the dignity of Don Rumsfeld, for whom he has the greatest respect and admiration.

Sometimes honesty is the best policy. And since he meets with Rumsfeld on a regular basis, he could have given him a heads up. He had already interview Gates for the DefSec position, so he obviously was dissatisfied with Rumsfeld's performance.

I just wish he would have announced it prior to the election. A lot of good people like Rep. Ann Northrup were left twisting in the wind.
