The problem is that it will be difficult for Steele to transition into the VP slot if he takes the RNC chair. It's not impossible - just more difficult.
I am also concerned that we have to do what we can to get him into the Oval Office, for the sake of the Free World. Being RNC chair is a dirty, nasty, streetfighting job - is that the best way to get him there?
With an ambassadorship he gains foreign experience as well, which would be vital for a VP slot.

You make a good point that the RNC position requires streetfighting, which might not support building a presidential image.
Still, sending him overseas makes me worry.
I'll comprimise with you: Steele replace Bolton who's toast. Thus, Steele gets foreign service credentials and will be more visible at home.

Point taken, but I don't think it's wise to send him out of the country.
Haley Barbour went from RNC chair to DC law firm and then home to Mississippi where he's our governor.
