I would offer a somewhat different post-mortem ... I think that the failure of the Administration to use the Bully Pulpit at the President's disposal - pointing out the failure of congress to move on an energy policy, a social security policy, tort reform, and immigration - contributed to the demise of the GOP majority. Folks just got tired of Gotcha Politics.
Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
I agree that it was a significant contributing factor. Believing that the obvious correctness of conservative positions makes it unnecessary to constantly educate the public is a serious error.
If GWB had the gift of 'schmooze' that BJ had...we'd be celebrating another pubbie victory.
But if you watched any of Bush's press conferences he did this repeatedly. As a republican president he has an awkward tightrope to walk with every move he makes and every word he utters, because as I already pointed out the media will translate what he does any way they want.
No matter what Bush would have done/said the media would've given their negative spin on it. It's a tough thing to work against something that has the media as it's PR 24/7.
