One of Howie's affiliates, WCRN AM 830 in Worcester, has a big announcement they are taking over for WTAG as
Red Sox affiliate next year (with "50,000 watts of NIGHTTIME power!"). That should help to the west since WRKO goes directional at night (points the signal north-and-south
due to FCC requirements). Howie had mentioned those
west of Boston who lose the WRKO signal after dark can
try WCRN.

http://www.wcrnradio.com

It was mentioned on a radio board that hearing "Sweet Caroline" as part of the WCRN promos was a good clue. By the way I thought I read in one paper that
the tradition of the Sox playing that song during the middle of the 8th inning goes back to the fact that a Sox employee's wife gave birth to a girl named Caroline; the song was played in her honor, and it caught on...even appearing in the movie "Fever Pitch" as the crowd
chants So Good! So Good! Along with it.

Yet a quick websearch drags up an article in the paper whose parent company owns 17 per cent of the team, and el Globo says that the Fenway Park "DJ" started to play it and it just caught on with the crowd. (It was on a list of older rock songs that other stadia played as well.) I read somewhere online that the Mets also picked up the tradition of playing the tune, and I remember hearing it at a
minor league park in Ohio last year. Somewhere out there is that little article I read
saying that the birth of a daughter to a Red Sox employee is the real reason why...

Ah! And here it is (adding "daughter" to the yahoo search was the key). And again it comes from the Globe:
the Red Sox had an employee named Billy Fitzpatrick who worked with them from 1984-2003, and in Dec. 1998 Billy's daughter Caroline was born. " At a Red Sox game the following summer, with Billy nearby in the control room, former public address announcer Ed Brickley
requested that ''Sweet Caroline" be played." Fenway
Park "DJ" Amy Tobey did, and noticed the Sox fans seemed to enjoy it. For a time, it was only played when the Sox were leading or if it was
a close game (kind of like the Angels' "Rally Monkey" bit or the Sox' own Rally Karaoke guy, Kevin Millar) but reaction to it was "so strong" that it became a regular fixture
just before the Sox came up in the bottom of the 8th.

And now you know...the rest of the Story!--raccoonradio

potential for fraud is there.)

Dems Big Night Called Into Question

by Robert F. Kennedy Jr./Rolling Stoned Magazine

The successful night the Democrats had this past Tuesday should be investigated. I have it on
high authority that DNC Chair Howard Dean was part of a vast left wing conspiracy with Diebold
and other vote counting machines to help insure a Democratic victory.

Even my own uncle's huge victory in Massachusetts was affected. Granted, he would have won
anyway, but if shenanigans by local union organizers had not taken place, he would have won by
only 35 per cent, not 40 per cent.

Diebold took bribes from major Democrats and helped to swing the election their way. "We outbid
the Republicans this time, so they had us as a client instead," said one prominent Democrat
who asked not to be named...

election talk etc I don't know if Bradley was in the death pool

Howie will always be doing shows but it depends on what station you listen to...as I said, WRKO supposedly will put
the Sox games on WEEI during afternoons...there's a chance
Howie's last half hr could be cut off but maybe the pregame
show for 7 pm starts could also go to WEEI. If you're in
Springfield area, relax; Entercom pulled Sox broadcasts off
Howie's affiliate WHYN (to their own 105.5 FM) so no more
pre-emptions there...
Meanwhile if you're in Burlington VT I know Howie affiliate
WVMT 620 runs the Yankees--not sure if their ballgames
will pre-empt him or not.

There could be conflicts on WXTK 95.1 on the Cape which is
Sox affiliate (for now) and Howie station too.

I still think the Sox could go on WEEI so as not to
pre-empt Howie (and if not, and the Sox insist on being
on 680, Entercom could move Howie to WMKK 93.7 or
something--but no, I think weekday aft. games--not as
many as you'd think!--would be on WEEI.

Oh and speaking of radio, John DePetro wants his job back
and he claims WRKO/WEEI is having a double standard
(they only suspended Dennis/Callahan)...Of course was that
D&C's first offense?...I wonder if WRKO is trying to not be TOO controversial what with Sox affiliating with them...

DePetro has a petition to "get me back on the air" on his site. There's a pic of John Belushi from Animal House:
"Did you say over? NOTHING is over till we say it is!"...Though maybe at some point Bluto Blutarski will go up
to John and tell him the same thing he told Flounder: "My advice to you...is to start drinking heavily..."

If you see DePetro dumping 10,000 marbles in front of...oh, OK. That's enough :)

No, but I thought I saw JDP walking around Sorority Row with a big ladder the other night.

I have the supposed real story on "Sweet Caroline" and the Sox which was posted here, I think, some time ago. It's on my home PC, and is pretty simple.

Some intern for the Sox back in 2002 or 2003 was asked to pick out some music to play between innings, and she picked "Sweet Caroline" for the 8th inning bump. The Sox went on a winning streak, with some comeback wins the first couple times she played the song. The fans picked up on it, and the rest is history, apparently.

Not sorry to see DePetro go. He was just horrible. I'd like to hear those 2 young guys,"The Pundits" instead. They went to college with my daughter.
