Here's the deal. George Allen lost this race himself. It really wasn't part of the wave... but that didn't help.
See below:
The macaca incident, in isolation, would have blown over. The problem is that it opened the floodgates to all the other stuff in Allen's past that made him sound like a Neanderthal.
Because Webb was a Navy secretary and a Vietnam veteran and Allen was a civilian who maybe once set foot in a Vietnamese restaurant?
That brought out the Ku Kluxers to vote for their boy, Webb. As you recall, Webb also benefited from an antisemitic attack against one of his opponents in the Democrat primary.
We also have the example of the leader of one of the Confederate heritage groups (who used to speak highly of Allen) coming out and criticizing him once he'd heard about Allen's mother.
I don't think it takes much detective work to see what happened, and students of Virginia history really shouldn't be surprised.
I'll bet she was startled to see them out in force in Virginia hunting her and her son down.
Maybe we could get that epitome of Democrat virtues to run ~ you know the guy, Jim Moran, the Congressional drunken wifebeating childmolester who accepts campaign financing from AlQaida.
Webb is not to be trusted. Guy reminds me a lot of the crowd around VP Burr ~ a regular Bonapartist.
Then why did they vote for Webb? He's not some Lt. in the field anymore; he writes cockbooks.
Good advice. Robert Moses (the New York parks and highways guy) got out of elective politics because he had trouble saying just what religion he was. Of course there was no disgrace in a Republican losing in 1934 as Moses did.
Kind of sad about Allen. If you're a guy from California, whose father was from Michigan and whose mother was from Tunisia, you're probably better off not trying the whole good ol' boy Confederate thing. John Warner got along fine without it. Jim Webb was also from out of state, but he could pull off the Dixie bit better than George.
That's what I was thinking. Why would a conservative vote for a man who even if he's a war hero and is as conservative and patriotic as any American who ever lived will give Rat's like Kennedy, Schumer, Clinton, Durbin, Biden, etc, etc, the Senate majority? Don't those people know that holding the Senate majority is as important in some ways as holding the White House for cryin out loud.
If I lived in RI I would have voted for Chafee even though he is one of the last people I can think of who I would vote for under any other circumstances. Because even if his Rat opponent was a paragon of conservatism and the epitome of patriotism, his value to the Rats as a rung on the ladder to majority status would prevent me from voting for him and would motivate me to vote for the liberal puke Chafee instead. Of course my original question assumes that all military voters are conservatives and I'm sure that isn't true, although I think probably more are than aren't.
Anyway it's over and done now, the Rats have Congress sewed up and our enemies in every stinking sh#thole in the Islamic world are no doubt dancing in the streets and sending gifts to each other like they did after 9/11.
