Hardee-har-har. The "Republicans" may have "held on to their base", but in truth the RINO Republicans LOST big time, so in truth, their "base" means squat.

Time to bid the Republican "base" a firm farewell. Someone needs to redefine conservatism to the silly RINO twits who didn't have enough stones to stand for their alleged beliefs.

I am past disgusted. Strong leadership is needed and we have not and do not now have such leadership.

So what IS the "real conservative" base's position on Iraq?

Waging war like our forefathers did
End the nation-building & "winning hearts and minds"
Stop groveling to the UN
Let the generals do their job instead of the bureaucrats

The war could have been over at the end of 2003, easily.

I don't know why Bush doesn't just pull out all the stops, now. He isn't running for president again, he doesn't have to worry about losing the house and senate, we already have. We continue to try to clean up the insurgency indefinitely and all we are going to do is lose even worse in 08. He should just say lets wrap up this thing no matter what it takes. Lets win it!

But they also run to the center and pick up the moderates. If half of the people who vote for them knew what they really stand for they would lose. The dems win because they run to the center. We lose cause we don't want our guys to stray.

Our guys 'stray' as a matter of course. Straying is what they do best.

Tell me, who was the last man to win the WH in a landslide and did he have to 'stray' to do it?

You say the liberty voter. I'm guesing you mean fiscally conservative, socially liberal. Well, about a third of FR is conviced we need the people who are the other way round.

I use the term Liberty voter instead of libertarian, because the latter term has been hopelessly contaminated by the wackos in the LP.

Liberty voters are (sometimes) fiscal conservatives and (sometimes) social liberals, but in either case are passionate about the government, especially the government at Washington, LEAVING US ALONE TO LIVE AS WE SEE FIT.

If we on the right cannot agree on this as a foundational principle, we will never be in the majority again.

Eh, JD was on Hannity today, and told him that they have found over 100,000 ballots somewhere. They are in the process of counting 25,000 a day, until they count them all. Now, obviously both candidates will get more votes, but that opens up a whole new can of opportunity for JD. Now contrast that with Burns in Montana, and Allen in Virgina, who folded (like all those gentlemen in the Republican party)and did not ask for a recount. Can you see a Democrat in the same position doing the same? Not on your life. They will fight until the end. Republicans are the party of nice guys, and will not want to look like they have any spine. JD Hayworth is my kind of conservative.

Would you have brought everyone home from Japan in 1945? That Nation-building did work out pretty well, it kept the Soviets out anyway...as well as South Korea, perhaps. I agree with you about letting generals do their job. If we'd left in 2003 don'tcha think the Iranians would be there in force now with multiple nuclear programs going on paid for with Iranian AND Iraqi oil? Where would we base our planes if we have to stomp on them? Afghanistan? Should we have left there too and not bothered with nation-building? Perhaps handed it over to Packistan. To what end I'm not sure. Not worrying about nation building I think worked well in a world far far distant and much less connected than our own but I acknowledge in some cases it makes sense. I just don't think Iraq is one of those cases. Haiti? Sure. Dafur? Maybe.

Ping!

Here's my theory about the 2006 elections. We got zapped, because independents soured on corruption (Ney/Foley) and Iraqi.

Here's my theory. Too many Republicans are in wishful thinking and not honest about objective reality.

That reality varies from district to district, candidate to candidate. But it has some similarities.

To quote Standard Oil's John Swearingen: "You expect more from Republicans ... and you'd better get it."

You expect Dems to be in sex and bribery scandals. You are seldom disappointed.
You expect Republicans to be moral, honest, etc. When you are disappointed, you react accordingly.

The Dems (and MSM) were able to take a small reality and exaggerate it into an image that Republicans were generally corrupt hypocrites.

Disappointed Republicans were motivated to stay home. I think analysis will show that a significant part of those who provided the big turnout for Bush in 2004 stayed home this time. Meanwhile a significant part of the big turnout for Kerry again turned out this time.
