Cute. They'd make great guest houses or play houses. Though I think I could build one cheaper.

I like the tin roofs. Nothing like sleeping under a tin roof. and they last 100 years with occassional care and painting.

Man, those are tight quarters. That said, I guess they beat sleeping outside in December.

Everyone should buy one of of these. Seventy-five years from now, people will happily pay $750,000 (or whatever the equivalent turns out to be in 2081) for one of these cottages in near-original condition. Just look at what people are willing to pay today for a Craftsman house, which is nothing more than a prefab right out of the Sears catalog.

The first time we had a thread on these Katrina cottages, I posted how much they reminded me of the "Sunday houses" in the Hill Country of Texas.

They were found mostly in and around Fredericksburg, TX, and were built by German (mostly) farming and ranching families 150 years ago for weekend visits when they came into "town" for Saturday purchases and Sunday church-going.

I love them! Here's one:

In California, these homes would be worth $1,000,000.

Thanks so much for this thread, Lorianne. (The rancorous, finger-pointing, pity party around here is getting sooo old already!)

These cottages are adorable & would fit in perfectly with their classic prototypes anywhere from the Panhandle to Galveston, wouldn't they? I do kinda worry about uplift on those overhangs on the bottom two, though, but if they pass the Dade code, who am I to argue?

For the Katrina victims who have been triple-dipping at Fema this past year and would like someplace a little more 'trendy' to hang their hat, however, Dwell magazine has come up with some more modernist prefab offerings at a considerably steeper price:

I think they're darling. They'd make a cute home office or a studio for an artist. You could use it for a gardener's shed or even a guest cottage. Wouldn't it be nice to have the in-laws come to visit and be able to say good night to them without having them under the same roof?

I thought the term for this style was a "shotgun" house, as in you could shoot a shotgun from the front door to the back door without hitting anything.

$45 per square foot.

So 936 feet would cost about $47,000.00? That's better than $94,000.00.

Perfect for a rentals near the ocean. Hurricane threat comes along, roll all your properties inland.

I could make a killing on the rhode island shore with a parking lot. $200 a night, then shove them to the back of the lot and charge $20 a day for the 8 parking spots they cover. Need a lot of flex hose, though.

Nice for a fishing camp. China is supposed to be shipping a bunch of these pre-fabbed to the gulf region. Maybe that is where Lowe's is getting them.

Mrs. jimfree has a 96 y/o aunt who still lives in Greenville IL in the Sears home her husband built in 1937.
