Bush, Rumsfeld Agree: ‘Timing Right for New Leadership at Pentagon’

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2006 -- Calling Donald H. Rumsfeld “a superb leader during a time of change,” President Bush announced at a White House news conference today that he and Rumsfeld have agreed the time has come for a change in leadership at the Pentagon.

Bush said he will nominate Bob Gates, former director of central intelligence and current president of Texas A&M University, to succeed Rumsfeld as secretary of defense.

“Our military has experienced an enormous amount of change and reform during the last five years while fighting the war on terror, one of the most consequential wars in our nation’s history,” Bush said. “Don Rumsfeld has been a superb leader during a time of change, yet he also appreciates the value of bringing in a fresh perspective during this time of war.

“Don Rumsfeld is a patriot and has served our country with honor and distinction,” Bush continued. “He is a trusted advisor and a friend, and I’m deeply grateful for his service to our country.”

Rumsfeld became the youngest person to hold the top Pentagon post under President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. He has served in the post under President Bush since the current administration took office in January 2001.

If I were in a better mood, I'd disagree with you. LOL

As a thank for his service, the President accepted Rummy's resignation so that Rummy does not have to spend the next years being yelled at by people who have never served this country and don't respect those who do.

What focus did Rumsfeld have...the ability to use autopenned condolence letters to loved ones of fallen soldiers? The ability to "go to war with the Army you have" when troops are scrambling for scrap armor for IED protection? Or, how 'bout, the ability to steer Stryker Army vehicles to Ratheon Corp. in hopes of a RPG shield a decade from now when an Israeli "Trophy" system already exists for Marine Corps variants?

Can't stand the Cheshire Cat Bill Crystal. He just has this smirk that sends me to other stations. Crystal isn't a conservative...he is a RINO who loves McLame. Ugh!

Total disaster last night but it may turn out for the best as this group of leaders was more interested in power retention than working on real issues. Better hope we can block immigration amnesty.

Rummy resigned so that the Democrats have the wind taken out of their sails in their investigation of the war.

Don't think so. He's still subject to subpoena, and they'll drag him in whether he's Sec/D or not.

This appointment strikes me too much like that of Robert McNamara(DoD '61-'68); i.e. another bureaucrat with very little direct military experience.

Something like 2 yrs, as a briefer, in the USAF. (!?)

Compare Gates' resume with Rumsfeld ( find it on Wikipedia) and you'll come to the conclusion that Gates, by comparison, is a flyweight.

Rummy just screwed up all the Commie 'RAT plans for profiling in front of the cameras while raking him over the coals. Now he can flip them all off like the lowlife scum they are and tell them to take a hike. No stylin' for the cameras in front of Rummy! Sorry 'RATS!!! You lose!! Hahahahaha!

Bush will be up for war crimes before this is over. The dems are going to have about a 2 weeks of peaceful gloating, and then the knives will come out.

You repeating these silly talking points shows no understanding of the man or the job. When Rumsfeld spoke today he seemed beaten down. Remember when the fickle press corps called him a rock star? What a bunch of harpies.
