WASHINGTON -- President Bush said Wednesday Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is stepping down and former CIA Director Robert Gates will take over at the Pentagon and in prosecuting the war in Iraq.

Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said.

Give up Johnnie.....some people can't accept the truth when it is spelled out for them.

These new names on the boards today sound frightenly familiar. They seem to show up only in bad times. I say we make a list. :o)

"I am not worrying about impeachment. If clinton taught us anything, it is that the impeachment ceremony does not matter to anyone."

Best way to get Dubya's numbers up is for the House to go on some half-cocked impeachment tear, instead of appearing to tend to business. Worked great for Bubba's ratings. Besides, with a 51-49 senate (assuming Webb wins and Holy Joe goes with the Dems) there isn't a snowball's chance of conviction in the senate.

"Oh, and should you die defending your country, rest assured that my PA staff will compose letter to your loved ones, only it will be signed by autopenned because I'm just too busy to personally hand write the one or two letters a day that are required...after all you go to war with the SECDEF that you have!"

Wow. Thanks for the clarification. And I'm sure the 600,000 dead, but "free" Iraqis would thank you, too, if not for their current state of "liberation." Of course, some might say that Mr. Bush's war of choice is the single biggest foreign policy disaster in the history of the United States. Time will tell.

IIRC, Rumsfeld offered his resignation back in 2004. Recently reelected President Bush refused it

Yep, betcha he's sorry he didn't now.

President Bush today announced he is replacing Donald H. Rumsfeld as secretary of defense, saying a "fresh perspective" is needed at the Pentagon to deal with the war in Iraq.

How long ago was it that the President said that Rumsfeld would be "his man" until the end of his term.

Less than a month I think

Doesn't do much for the notion of Bush meaning what he says and saying what he means. I thought he was supposed to be a Cowboy.

One way to prevent them from impeaching Bush is to move Condi up to VP. The Dems couldn't impeach her AND they sure wouldn't want her to be President.

Rush knows he's on his way to early retirement beginning next year, so he's going to be really honest. There's not a thing anyone can do to him that he cares about, short of locking him up.

More Iraqi civilians are dying as each month goes on than the previous month. Is that "winning"?

If you measure the wars success by how many US / coalition troops are dying each month...then I guess by your standards if we had all stayed home and gone fishin' instead ...we would have won the war even before the first foot was set on Iraqi soil. Face it. We had Saddam in a box (pre-war)...he was just stewing in his own juices. The war in Iraq was (and is) a waste of American lives and taxpayer money. The real fight is in the Trashcan-istans.

Cheney could do this job better than Bush ever could.

You forget the "Nixon Strategy." In 1972 they went after Agnew first, then Nixon.

They'll go after the "Cheny-Halliburton" connection first, then go after Dubya.

What's with this list stuff? Have we become the Soviets and people are not allowed to state their own opinion without being put on some sort of list? This is the second time I've seen a list mentioned lately and frankly, if true, it stinks.

I may not agree with certain opinions, but people have a right to their opinions, that is what free society is all about and what the dems would like to see taken away and I don't think we need to start playing into that thinking.

To all you losers who want to attack Bush and/or Rumsfield because you didn't get your way in yesterdays election,

GROW UP!

If any of you has accomplished a fraction of what either of these two have accomplished for our country, I take it back.

Needed repeating!!!

If he knew he was going to do this, then the comment last week that Rummy was staying two more years was uncalled for.. he didn't have to announce it if he didn't want to, but he didn't have to further alienate some of the voters who hinged on the war and dislike of Rumsfeld.

I love Dick Cheney and his wife, too..... IMO he should stay right where he is and the heck with Pelosi and Soros and all the Halliburton crud. GOP needs to grow a spine and start standing up to these lefties instead of letting them keep walking over us like a doormat.

You're welcome. I'm sure your other friends in the newsroom have a different perspective.

Out here, from under the rock, we see a stunning victory, a deposed tyrant, a new government, unprecedented freedom -- and that's for starters.
