I think you're right, this election wasn't a referendum on much of anything, rather typical 6th year exhaustion. Neither side was particularly enthusiastic. My reason for wanting the info out pre-election wasn't political advantage, simply honesty. Last weeks I want Rummy at Defense through the end of my term, not pretty when the plans have already been made, but it won't have any repercussions either. The changes likely to come in the new Iraq plan, that may engender some interest. Even controversy. And in theory, it really is the type of thing elections are about.

Most 6th year elections are referendums of a sort. Politics is a pendulum.
Frankly, we didn't get railed as hard as Eisenhower in '58 and Reagan in '86, or even Nixon in '74.
