Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a key target of Iraq war critics, gave no indication Wednesday that he planned to step down in the wake of Democratic midterm election gains, his chief spokesman said.

Eric Ruff, the Pentagon press secretary, said he participated in meetings with Rumsfeld on Wednesday morning and heard no talk of changing war strategies or of Rumsfeld leaving his post.

Rumsfeld didn't plan to step down but it looks like he forgot to talk to Bush about it.

This says a lot about the GOP leadership. They are reacting to yesterday badly. Even more justification for cleaning house at the top.

After this crap...hopefully Bush will resign...sheesh...this is quickly turning into a farce....

I think it's pretty clear by now that nobody with access to "the top" has any interest in cleaning house.

The fact that the first order of business this morning is to throw Rumsfeld under the bus graphically illustrates just how thoroughly out of touch the GOP has become.

This was a long time coming. I'm not sad. As much as I enjoyed his temerity vis-a-vis the press corps, the Iraqi campaign has been a disaster. I don't know where the breakdown occurred, but there was no fire in the belly re: Iraq like we had with Afghanistan.

This does not bode well for 2008.

I wonder if the Repubs in the Senate will have the fortitude to confirm him before the next congress.

...the Iraqi campaign has been a disaster.

I heartily disagree. It has not been a disaster.

If you look at this war in the context of history, things are going overwhelmingly well.

The MSM has done it's typical negative spin job and far too many Americans still believe what they're told, or believe that their being told the whole truth.

No spit. This move is as tone deaf as Harriet Meyers. I'm stunned.

The facts say otherwise.

It's too bad. I liked Rummy.

I understand the optimism, but the reality as I see it - and without the help of MSM - is that the unwillingness of this administration to take on Syria while they were sending insurgents across the border to attack our troops sent a fatal message to Iran that we could not stomach expanding the war to stop the terrorist elements from trickling in. The result is that a cold-blooded murderer like Al-Sadr will likely end up in charge of a Shiite state in the south, the Sunnis are going to slaughter the Shiites in Baghdad, and the Turks will eventually come up with a "final solution" for the Kurds in the North.

We can't stay there forever. It's not going to be pretty when we leave. And if I'm Pervez Musharraf, I'm hiring a different car starter/food taster.

I think Bush has opened his file cabinet -- the one with all the undated letters-of-resignation in it. Rummy says he has "no plans to resign" and -- Whammo -- Bush 'accepts' his resignation! Make no mistakes, Bush is trimming his sails for the war 'investigation' to come.
