National Rifle Association Suffers Self-Proclaimed 'Biggest Election Disaster in Nearly 15 Years'

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In the wake of the Republican party losing control of the U.S. House and amidst key Senate losses, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has suffered its "biggest election disaster in nearly 15 years" according to the NRA's own election materials. In its magazines and in member communications leading up to the 2006 midterm elections, the NRA repeatedly warned that its "pro-Second Amendment House of Representatives" was at stake. And in a direct-mail appeal sent out in July 2006, the NRA's Political Victory Fund declared that "you and I could be headed for our biggest election disaster in nearly 15 years" if democrats were to take control of one or both Houses of Congress.

In the wake of the NRA's electoral defeat, Violence Policy Center Legislative Director Kristen Rand states, "The gun lobby's foot soldiers went AWOL in this election."

The November 2006 pre-election "Choose or Lose" edition of the NRA's "America's 1st Freedom" magazine admonished members that, "Our recent victories and future legislative objectives are at risk this Election Day if gun owners don't rally and go to the polls to support the true friends of the Second Amendment." The magazine amounted to little more than a 64-page attack on democrats, with a particular focus on House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee head Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). In the publication, NRA President Sandra S. Froman warned, "We are at war. Our freedom is at stake. The Second Amendment is America's original homeland security and you, my fellow NRA members, are at the heart of our national defense. But Pelosi and her fellow extremists, who are hoping to take control, oppose our national security efforts and oppose your Right to Keep and Bear Arms...Those who would seize power on Nov. 7 are unrelenting opponents of your values and beliefs..."

The gun lobby's allegiance to Republicans shows in its political giving. In 2006, the NRA's PAC gave 85 percent of its campaign contributions to Republican candidates while Gun Owners of America gave 100 percent to Republicans. In addition, Republican activists Grover Norquist, David Keene and Ollie North serve on the NRA's board of directors in addition to current and former Republican Members of Congress.

Just one week before the Nov. 7 election, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre summed up the urgency of the situation in an "exclusive" interview with the pro-gun publication "The New Gun Week." Warned LaPierre, "Gunowners need to get to the polls because the battle lines are drawn...(W)e need to erect a barricade to protect the Second Amendment from the handgun control crowd... They want to unleash the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) on every law-abiding gunowner in America."

In addition to the House turnover, NRA-backed Senate candidates also lost in key races including Rick Santorum (R- Pa.), Jim Talent (R-Mo.), Mike Bouchard (R-Mich.), and Michael Steele (R-Md.). In the two Senate races still too close to call, the NRA backed Republicans George Allen in Virginia and Conrad Burns in Montana.

Democrats may not have said much about guns in this election, but with people like Pelosi, Kennedy, Waxman and Hastings in leadership positions you can be certain that they will push for national firearm registration or possibly microprinting (or both). They can't help it, its in their DNA. Further, our weak Senate and weak presidient will allow it. Our government is utterly without backbone.

All firearms owners should stand by to be treated like third grade girls being taught how to use an Easy Bake Oven. These people are feminine and maternalistic to their core.

Then make sure you have a secure, underground exit plan before you torch the house, errrr, compound.

We now have to suffer the slings and arrows of halfwits.

this is one of "joys" of defeat.

There were many many Dhims who were elected on Pro Second amendment platform, they had better put up or lose in the next cycle.

Now we cannot just sob and cry, but work for 2008.

The wingnuts do not have a majority, so they cannot do nothing. Sure, extra gun rights and new pro-gun legislation likely won't come, but the Pelosi agenda cannot come either.

Seemed like the Democrats in Missouri created their own NRA like organization to fool the gunholders.

I remember the groups ad endorsing McClaskel and pretending that development of private property was what gun owners should worry about.

Trent and Wicker.....I did my part also but couldn't affect the other parts of the country. I voted. That was all I could do and sit by and watch the Yankees throw away a lot of our future.

Keep crying, maybe it'll do some good.

In the meantime, I'll keep waiting for small-government candidates to appear who will keep their word. That's what the past 12 years were about, and the GOP pi$$ed it away, and even FReepers insult those who refuse to continue to take it blindly. Gnash your teeth, whine that it's my fault, assign blame, whatever makes you happy.

I do not owe the GOP my vote or my support, especially after they failed so horribly domestically. They continued to act like a minority party, they bloated government spending, they failed to do anything about the borders, they passed CFR, they left it to the President to do all of the heavy lifting in Iraq, they could not rein in their own RINO's on numerous important votes, and the list goes on and on. The President single-handedly had more political will and courage than the Republican majorities in Congress (and I'm no blind supporter of the President, either).

Whatever the Dems bring over the next 2 years (or more), the GOP has earned it. If they figure it out for 2008, maybe they'll be a viable option again. Until then, as I said, I'll be waiting.

I will move to a location with good water, defensible terrain, and that isn't downwind of a major urban area. You go on waiting for that perfect candidate until the detonations start. Just try not to look towards surface zero, because as we all know, it's all fun and games until someone gets their eyes melted out.

Couldn't we also look at from the point that Democrats did not even mention gun control that I heard about? It seems that many of the Dems that won last night are for guns or am I mistaken? I would hope that the Democrats have learned their lesson about trying to take people's guns, but I could be wrong....

Their leadership hasn't!

Moreover, why is the NRA supporting Democrats at all?

Remember Waco.

They will come with a lot more firepower than you or I have.

Perhaps. But they won't be shooting at children.
