Time to say Mr. Rumsfeld, your services no longer needed?

Posted on 11/07/2006 10:04:17 PM PST by meandog

Okay history fans, if Bush is to be compared to Lincoln then maybe he ought to do what the embattled Lincoln did to first War Secretary Simon Cameron in 1862 when his Congress was under fire: Accept Rumsfeld's resignation. Supposedly, the Don of the Pentagon offered it on two occasions, according to the source himself and it is apparent that a change in the tactics of fighting a losing war are now needed. Rumsfeld went against the advice of sound judgement from generals such as Shenseki and others who urged him to invade with at least as many boots on the ground (600,000) as was required in Gulf War I. Ever the arrogant, he ignored them and came with only 120,000--the result was widespread looting, possible WMDs being shipped to places such as Syria and the beginnings of sectarian violence. With 600,000 we had a chance to employ the proven military doctrine of overwhelming force. Now, the opportunity is gone just like the majority we once had in Congress. And, while the president is at it, he might also consider what Lincoln did to Hannibal Hamlin.

Another reason to get rid of him is that there won't be someone for the Dims to grill once the investigations begin after Jan. 20.

Heck, why not get rid of Cheney and Rice too?

Have you considered that perhaps Rumsfeld is exactly the guy you want in front of an investigating committee? Pretty articulate fellow, if you haven't noticed.

"Another reason to get rid of him is that there won't be someone for the Dims to grill once the investigations begin after Jan. 20." Nope, they'll just go after whom ever gets appointed or merely block any and all appointments, unless it is "Ashley Wilkes."

Unless you mean killing him there is no reason the rats wouldn't call him on the carpet even if he wasn't SECDEF. The simple fact of the matter is, now that the American public has pulled the carpet from under the feet of our troops, we need a strongman like Rumsfeld more than ever.

I wouldn't worry so much about that. If Rummy is gone, there will be someone else to investigate. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush's daughters are in front of a committee before Bush leaves office.

No way. Have you any idea of the problems getting someone decent confirmed? Rumsfeld stays.

Why not do what Clinton did when he appointed former Sen. Cohen to the job? And I have a good name for Sec. Def. that the Dims will have to approve: Former Ga. Sen. Sam Nunn.

Rummy, a failed Ford holdover, is clearly out of his league and possibly the most hated Sec. Def. since McNamara. I should know, too, because I've spoken to a lot of folks who work there.

There is not one Democtrat in which Rumsfeld could not make a fool of-he is clever and sharp-they would be scared to debate him

Actually not. Bush would have to put up someone with a plan to win. I don't agree that the Congress and Senate went demo because people want to lose. They voted, in large part, because things have not improved the way they expected things to. Short sighted and misinformed? Yes. But, the message of "we will be greeted as liberators" seems to have worked out otherwise.

Honestly, if a change was to be made, it should have been made months ago. I thought a change should have been made, although I realize I'm in the minority here in that thought.

Horrible idea. Rumsfeld's doing a great job. Can no one else see that what we are doing in Iraq is the best thing we could possibly be doing right now? I think a continued low-grade fight against the terrorists over there is *exactly* what we need to protect ourselves against attacks. All the terrorists go to Iraq to fight our soldiers. Pull our soldiers from Iraq - or even get too successful in Iraq - and they stop going there to fight our soldiers and start coming *here* to fight our women and children. We have to maintain our presence there, and we have to give the thugs the idea that they can go to Iraq and actually hurt us. If we look invincible over there, or if we leave, they'll head for the more vulnerable places - namely, the mainland US.

How do you plan to confirm someone?

Exactly - no matter how much grilling Rumsfield gets on the Hill, it would be nothing like the confirmations process.

I'd like to see Bolton run in some Pres. primaries. Smart and tough is what we need, although I don't know how he stands on many issues.
