ORLANDO - Katherine Harris ended her bid to unseat Sen. Bill Nelson the way she started: badly down at the polls, snubbed by GOP leaders and defiantly refusing to give in.
''We don't believe in the polls. We believe in the people. Only votes count,'' said Harris, predicting victory as she waved to passersby at the corner of 26th Street and Manatee Boulevard in Bradenton on a drizzly Election Day afternoon.
By then, it was too late.
Nelson jumped to a commanding, double-digit lead early and never let up, indicating that Harris -- contrary to her repeated claims -- had little crossover appeal among Democrats and independents and managed mainly to attract her own Republican base, owing to her hard-right campaign.

What a shame. This has really made me question the GOP leadership.

It's really not entirely the GOP's fault. She lost a tough race, a spirited race.

She ran a crappy campaign, and the turnover in her staff was unbelievable.
Blame that on the national GOP if you want, but where does she have to take any responsibility?

Shaw lost by bout 9000 and that kills us

NO, I don't agree. The Propaganda and the lies that have been allowed to permeate our society is the problem. Elections are won by who can make the people believe the package they are selling.
The GOP failed.

AND she is broke. What a horrible idea for her to run. She just refused to believe every single person in Florida who knows anything about campaigns that it was a bad idea for her to run for the US Senate. She had yet to establish herself as a competent candidate in the House yet she got the bug and couldn't resist trying to move up. Even against a pathetically lackluster dem candidate, she was a detriment AND it was not a year for the GOP to be gaining ground in general. Its too bad since she could have had a future (and kept her millions since she doesn't have a job anymore).

I've always said she should have kept her Congressional seat, but she threw her hat in the ring and went for it though, gotta admire that on her part.

Not happy but not surprised. Hopefully he won't run again after this.
