Mark Steyn on the results...

Right now, this isn't a Dem landslide but a conventional Year Six election with an underperforming opposition party. 1938 Senate races: GOP picked up six seats. 1958 Senate election: Dems picked up 13 seats. 1986 Senate election: Dems picked up nine (net). In other words, by historical standards this is an excellent result for the President's party six years in. Needless to say, that's not a perspective the Dems, the media, the Europeans or the insurgents will have any time for....

The GOP lost a somewhat safe seat in Indiana because a Libertarian loon siphoned off enough votes to put the Dem over the top.

No, the Republican lost because so many in the party have strayed too far from the traditional GOP economic issue base.

The dems will RUE the day they got the House. Bush will (please) veto every crackpot bill they try to pass, and the repub senate will keep the whole thing in check. We get to keep approving judges, so far.

Well, I'm being a bit melodramatic, but it's been a depressing night. I'm still praying we can hold on to the Senate. I wouldn't mind two years of complete gridlock. In fact, I'd welcome it.

That's the plan, boop. Propose tax cuts that you know the Dems will kill, just for the electoral value in 2008. Make them vote against WOT issues. Let them rant and rave against good judges. It doesn't sell over the long haul, despite how bad things might look right now.

...the 800 pound gorilla in the living room is that we are in Iraq but 5 years after 9/11 we still don't have a handle on our own borders.

I think an even greater problem is folderol like censoring the Internet while letting social spending balloon out of control. Voters have figured, "if we're going to have skyrocketing government deficits, why not elect Democrats? They'll at least let us have Internet gambling and overseas prescription ordering!"

A lot of libertarian voters have gotten disenchanted with the GOP's Big Government, Bossing Your Personal Life approach to government and went to the Democrats.

A bigger lot probably didn't go quite that far, and would still be willing to vote Republican... if it's not raining on Election Day... and if the line at the polls isn't too long... and if there's nothing good on TV... and....

I wish Mr. Steyn could tell me how the people of New Jersey could be so moronic and how the state GOP could be so totally inept. The mix of corruption, patronage and special interest that run this state with taxes rising through the roof, eminant domain abuse and contractors cutting down every tree in sight after hefty contributions to the Dems, you would think that the Republicans could find a candidate who could mount a somewhat effective campaign. They have plenty of ammo to use.

One of the problems here is that there is no obvious successor. Hence, the GOP will feel rudderless for the next 2 years.

But now we WILL surrender our southern border and ultimately the enemy is the same.Pass an amnesty bill and we will have 40 million more illegal Latinos in a decade or less. When the Moslem Conversion wave sweeps through them America will be looking at replacing the Constitution with Sharia.
