Hopefully the GOP leadership will see the Republican corpses and realize that governing as democrat-lite is a losing strategy in the long term.
I truly believe that tonight can be a lot like election night 1992. If we nominate a viable presidential candidate and embrace the notion of fiscal conservatism then election night of 2008 can be like 1994 all over again.
Its possible I suppose but 94 was very special. See the House check kiting scandal really blew up in the Dems faces. My Mom is a 4th generation Democrat voted straight Republican ticket that year, even sent her sample ballot from the Dems (with all the Democrats marked for her) whited out and hand written all Republican names and then wrote on it, "Here ya go ya bunch of worthless crooks, cash this check!" and signed her name. And then sent it to the Ohio Democrat committee registered mail. With I might add a very long and blistering letter.
I don't know if we got that kind of vitriol built up right now.
Everyone could understand "Rubber Checks" and everyone knew if they had pulled that crap at the very least their bank would have closed their accounts and maybe they would have gotten arrested.
So people could easily figure that one out.
Tonight is a lot more like 1986 then 1994. D's won a big victory in House/Senate after getting their clock cleaned in 1984 because of Reagan's stumbles.
But we won in 1988, and that was important for the same reason it'll be just as important in 2008, and that is basic American survival in a dangerous world. Bush Sr. needed to preside over the fall of the Soviet Union, make sure it happened, just like we need to win in 2008 to make sure we win the WOT.
'86 was a serious setback, but we were going to win as long as we kept the Presidency. Same for this time.
