Looks like all Republicans from the most conservative (Santorum) to the most liberal (Chaffee) and everyone in between lost big, but as someone else pointed out all the Freepers with a "mindset" can find someone they didn't like anyway to blame for the losses. The only reason that you and I can both call ourselves Reagan Republicans is because Reagan was able to join all manner of conservatives, libertarians, some one issue voters, and almost anyone right of center, and turn us all into Republicans. Unfortunately, those days are long past.
The GOP's lack of response to the illegal immigration marches this spring severely depressed the base. This coupled with out of control speneding resulted in a 5% to 10% 'headwind' that all of the GOP candidates ran against.
Some GOP candidates who usually win by 25 points, like Trent Lott, could absorb it with no problem, but for those that faced tight races it was just too much to overcome.
Well, let's try to guess which "faction" won't get along.
I blame all the voters who didn't have the God given sense to realize this country was attacked on 9/11, we're fighting two wars with an enemy willing and able to chop heads off with frightening glee, illegals are pouring into this country, and the secular progressives have been doing their damndest to destroy this country within in a time of war.
And I might also add, the Democrats historical track record with regards to Iran and North Korea isn't something to feel good about either, despite all this hollow rhetoric they were saying on the campaign trail.
