If anything, I lay more blame at the feet of those here who repeatedly tell newcomers who disagree with the:
A)You're a commie, socialist demorat
B)Maybe you'd be more welcome at DU
C)You sure don't sound like a conservative.
I've counted more than 60 instances in just the last few months of people telling folks to go to DU. What's more, the vast majority of these folks seemed decidedly undecided.
My problem is when people get accused of that simply for being pragmatic. The country simply isn't as far to the right as we are (this *is*, FR, of course, what do we expect?) If we want 50%+1 we have to win people over. In some parts of the country that often means compromise.
I was tempted to make a crack that the US doesn't all lie south of the Mason-Dixon line but as I think about it I think it's more of a rural-vs.-urban issue. I think the problem plaguing PA and VA tonight is the bleeding of Philly and Washington into the rural areas of affluent, "sophisticated" social libs. I don't think there's any winning them over -- we need to outbreed them.
