Their main problem is they counted on the Democrats to play fair. The dims came out with all their dirty tricks because power is everything to them. Unfortunately, I am afraid the Republicans (minus great leadership) will be content to fall back into their old role of followers.

"Republicans had their chance and blew it"
The DemocRATs won't have a bullet proof majority and they have spent the last six years showing the Republicans how to use the rules of the House to stick it to the opposition and gum up the works.
We will, hopefully, have the Senate and we have W. This may keep the RATs out of the Whitehouse in '08.
It's up to the FreeRepublic and others like us to counter the MSM.
