The courts have ruled (wrongly) that flag desecration is protected under the 1st Amendment right of free speech.
This may change in time and legislation protecting the flag has been put forth and is opposed by the left as infringing on their constitutional right of dissent guaranteed by the symbol that protects their rights. This is irony bordering on insanity.
The flag and property was not theirs to desecrate. The symbolism of their actions vandalized valued property of others and the courts should hold them responsible for property damage and determine its value accordingly. The flag represented the appreciation of the nation to the family for the loss of life, forever irreplaceable. Severe damage awards would be appropriate and just.

Yeah - Why isn't flag burning a hate crime? Is it not an act designed to invoke anger and hurt in those with who you disagree?
