French media do not report on what is happening in their own country. The recent bus burning in Marseilles was given more coverage than the daily car and bus-burnings in Paris, Lyons and other large towns, because a 26 year old woman, a graduate student in science, was burned over 70% of her body and is presently fighting for her life in hospital.
The young woman is black, but as the young man who came to her aid said, "She looked white; her skin had peeled off from the flames."
Matthews on a show a few months back seemed to relish the idea of defeat in Iraq. He mused openly, dreamily, of our troops "gonna have to shoot their way out Iraq," and appeared immensely satisfied at the prospect.
Matthews went into the Peace Corps to avoid the draft, and like many of his type, considered the fall of Saigon a vindication for their cowardice and rerfusal to serve.
The picture of people scrambling to get on the helicopter as it lifted off the embassy roof is iconic for the Left.
Though our military never lost a battle in Vietnam our political class insured defeat, and that picture, blown up to poster size hung on the office walls, and may still hang there of many of our politicians in Washington. It was and is a favorite poster of the journo-political-professariat hate-America class.
Matthews longs to see our troops ordered away from Iraq and have to fight their way out. It is a yearning so strong he cannot temper his speech out of a decent regard for their safety.
To have a new poster of an American defeat would be for Matthews' a personal coup.
